Didn't you just get done telling us Zvents was a shining example of why Yahoo! and MSFT's maps were dead in the water? Wasn't the point that Google's ad network would be the reason they would never switch (for 24 hrs!?)?

Man. The crazy part is people are reading your pop-stragery analyses and possibly giving them any intellectual weight. Yowch.

Why do you keep saying that Yahoo doesn't have any ad service? Didn't they buy Overture a while ago? They've also opened a beta advertising program.

There are lots of other advertising options other than MSN, Google, and Yahoo as well. Bright ads and Chiquita come to mind. It's not like the web is the vast wasteland you make it out to be. ;)

Scoble is right about the licesne. I use google maps atleast 4 times a day. You figure there are 10,000 people like me (probably more but just speaking out loud for comparison reasons) then that means in 2 days, with the previous lisence, i would have used up all my queries!

After seeing the pictures people posted on Flickr from the MS event where they revelaed live, that Atlas looks AMAZING. the level of detail is far beyond that of googles.

Something that no one has done yet, imagine a dating site, with advertising, that shows you where people are in a general city. Think about how crazy that would be! A dating site, that shows me everyone in my home town, along with some advertising... like places I can go on a date! Movie theatres, restaurants. Hope someone makes it, sounds like an excellent mash up!

Scoble, why doesn't Virtual Earth do driving directions. This is BASIC map functionality. I can't see VE going far without something elementary like that. Seems like a bizarre oversight.

I think it's better (and more useful) to stick to the original notion of a disruptive innovation : it's something the incumbents can't get into because the structure of the market doesn't let them.

Google *did* disrupt the ad market. But not they're the incumbents, they have lock-in. What's needed is a lock-pick.

My MS Streets & Maps already figures driving directions and puts all sorts of hotels, eateries, etc on the maps. I can print them out or sync to my Axim or smartphone. The GPS works with my laptop and Axim. MS already has a counter-disruptor--it just needs web enabling. Tell whomever to get to it!

Even still, I'll wager that McD's already has an agent camped out at the Googleplex with a signed blank check. Along with guys from Yum Brands (KFC/Taco Bell/Pizza Hut), Subway and Wendy's.

Finally, once Borland and WordPerfect did team up (with Borland buying WP), it was far too late to take back what they lost. I love the fact that Excel *still* has support for Lotus 1-2-3 .WKS and Symphony files. It almost seems like rubbing it in at this point. I work with people who weren't even born when I last used a slash menu. Not to mention I couldn't get the files off that 5.25" floppy disk anyway.

Two quibbles Robert - the usual ones too.

(1) There's that "real soon yet" crap. Last week it was in terms of that extremely underwhelming demo your company pulled off a few days ago. Two months ago it was regard the lame - but much better than '03 - PDC. Can you please quit speaking in these terms? Don't you see that most of your readers really hate it? (Oh, and tell your trainee-in-progress Brandon to stop with it too.)

(2) How - HOW! - can you speak about "trust" and "disruption" in the same paragraph? Yeah yeah, I know, new buzzwords - er, memes - that describe century-old concepts.... still. Consider the concepts you're speaking of..... how exactly CAN a Yahoo "trust" you when you seek blanket "disruption" at the same time?

"Disruption" = self-commoditization as a business plan

I was blogging (mostly to myself) about this over the last several days before Scoble started using exclamation points. I was coming to that conclusion after getting back from a marketing conference (eye-opening to an R&D guy), via themes like "Customer Satisfaction" and "Customer Loyalty".

Poke my blog for more random thoughts, but a summary of what I'm thinking:

In traditional business, you didn't want to manufacture a commodity (i.e. something produced for cost-of-goods) - you wanted to manufacture something that was dependent on commodities. E.g. Microsoft made gazillions on top of the commoditization of PCs.

I think the emerging model is to build something assuming it will itself be a commodity extremely quickly or immediately, and be striving to go to the next level and build on top of that commodity. Then turn around and do the same thing. Not only can your competition not stand still, it's hard for them to even catch up.

(From a software perspective, there are strong similarities to building and selling platforms, which is what Microsoft has traditionally done very well at.)

The nice thing about this is that it is great for the customer/consumer! You now have businesses bending over backwards to give the customers everything they want at an ever increasing rate, since slowing down for an instant means they get left in the dust.

But then again, I'm coming from an R&D background, so maybe this is business 101 and discredited already.

"Competition" is different than "disruption."

Before you accuse anybody of disrupting anybody, you should read (or re-read) "The Innovator's Dilemma" which the bible on how business disruption works and why businesses need to disrupt themselves to survive. Nowhere in that book does it say anything about anybody's stock price.

Instead of focusing on stock price and press releases, instead not focus on what Google and Yahoo are actually doing? You and many others have been dazzled by the Google stock price and you've let that translate into thinking that they're infallible geniuses. And they may very well be geniuses, but the stock price isn't a measure of that.

The problem MS has is that no on at all trusts them beyond the letter of the contract. The trustworthiness of individuals has no bearing on this. I know quite a few MS people, they're all good people lots of integrity.

But as a company, MS is an insecure, easily angered child with dangerous weapons and the need to use them regularly. The most recent debacle with Windows Media shows this. There's no way someone just "lone wolfed" that. Impossible. That was "Let's see if we get caught".

In every case, MS is the perfect example of Rhett Butler's great line in "Gone With the Wind":

"You're like a thief that has just been arrested. You're not sorry you stole from people, but you're terribly, terribly sorry you've been caught."

Until Bill, and SteveB are out of the picture and fully retired from the company, MS will never really change anything other than the veneer du jour. Which is a real shame, because with more focus, and getting rid of things that are not a part of their core competency, ("Everything" is not a core competency), they could easily pull off what Steve Jobs did at Apple.

This man (Allan Femi) is a lier, cheater, thief, and a lot of bad things more.
He told me that i have to send to him the money for a product, the iriver ifp 799
and when i had sended the money to him by western union at the name of Jonathen Amafonye
he never sends to me the mp3 player as we had deal before.
we talk by e-mail and msn, we talk a lot of time,
he want the money fast, and when he hand my money in his hands he never
send me nothing. Im a buyer and i dont want to know about anyone who buy
his products again because the person who do that loose his money.
He told me that the store keeper makes an error and send to me more
units that i had told to him, and because of an error of his store keeper
i have to pay more, i have to pay the tax for more products and if i pay
for that he will send me something. He wants more money and then he never
