Scobleizer: The real-time baby (what this means for media absorption)

  • Nalts · 3 months ago
I WANT A NEW BABY. Oh, sorry. What were you saying about, um, social media?
  • Bastian Lehmann · 3 months ago
I just love the way how you observe something and then make common sense out of it!

Great read as always and congrats for having such a cute baby.
I agree with you many people are still not aware of modern tools to get news, infact many of them don't even use emails.
  • technogran · 3 months ago
I certainly did Robert it was wonderful! I felt as if I was there with you both. It's wonderful just how far technology has progressed now to allow all of this.
He is adorable and I have been up to flickr to take a peek at your pics on there.

Your post really resonated with me. At CloudProfile where our primary users are small businesses, we see the continued heavy use of traditional communication tools being really important. It's been quite an adventure wirkin through the details for how to eliminate the need for a small business user to have to think about the communication channel as consciously as you had to in getting your message out. In doing so we've had to blend the real-time and social web with parallel routines for getting the same messages out via SMS and e-mail and phone. What's also amazing is how quickly the patterns of communications are changing - even though we still have to support all the traditional communications channels, we can see the pattern evolving towards the new tools each month even in the "normal population", which will keep us all on our toes.

Congratulations on the new addition to the family!

Congratulations ....I thought the situation like this exist only in India where reaching anyone by social media is still very far...but this happens every where..i think..

Qik has a record and upload app for the iPhone, just like the flickr uploader.

I feel really guilty for not recording either of my kids' first cry now! Congrats, Robert. All the best to you and the family.

Congrats Robert... glad to hear, no matter what the media, that you and your family are doing well and that Ryan made it!!

Congratulations! You have quite the big family now!

One thing I couldn't help noticing: Sequoia Hospital recognizes the power of viral marketing, by putting their name on the onesies. Everybody's first baby pictures include a subtle ad for the Hospital.

Awesome Robert. Congratulations and great to hear the way you captured and informed all your family, friends and your social media community.

Recording the first cry is so cool...

Congratulations, Robert and family. We're totally seeing another baby boomer period now - so many babies! (It's great!)

"Which brings me to a point. Very few of my friends (even professional types) read Twitter all the time. A lot of people found out only today that we had a baby, even though our baby’s birth was retweeted hundreds of times on Sunday and by lots of people with fairly large audiences."

FWIW - I was offline completely for the Rosh Hashana holiday. I had no idea since I don't use the computer during these holidays. I bet there are others who did not know due to the holiday.

I'd be darned curious now to know if the same thing would recur if it was just a regular weekend.

Robert, I know how you feel, because when Dashie was born I tried to do the same thing. You feel like a one-armed juggler with all the devices and tools it takes to notify and update. So difficult to switch back and forth among all those media. The closest to a simplified experience turns out to be the iPhone. I don't even carry my Flip anymore.

BTW, that was the most complete looking baby I've seen in quite a while. Dashie is still almost bald:-)

Congrats to you and Maryam! You're always outgoing and friendly whenever we meet, thanks for sharing your experiences with different tech.

Congrats! What a cute little Scoble!

Being a young, single 20-something, it's fun to watch others go nuts over new babies and family stuff. I come from a large family -- Filipino families consider uncles, aunts, cousins, a lot closer than American families do, from my observations -- and none of my family is very tech-enabled, but this makes me wish they were. Cool post!

Yeah, so as exciting as it is to have a baby... It's more exciting to have your name mentioned in my article, which is the stupidest one ever written about social media. It's on willvideoforfood. A MUST read. It took me about 24 minutes to write.

    Congrats Robert!!

First of all Congratulations guys! We're expecting twins in a couple of days, was planning on pushing the news out with a combination of email, then twitter (that gets syndicated to FriendFeed, Facebook and my blog), but hadn't given thought to recording videos our the first cry (cries in this face).

So thanks for the pointers and good luck! If you ever think you're having a hard time at night, think about what it could be like if you were having twins ;)

Congrats on the baby. Why not just post a few photos, videos and updates to Facebook? You (I'm the same way somethings) are always trying to complicate things with 25 different communication conduits that your "target market" doesn't use so you run yourself ragged posting and tracking real-time responses to c-sections instead of being in the moment. That's kind of sad. Next time, throw your stuff up on FB, cross-post to Twitter and enjoy the show.

I did something similar for the birth of our daughter last year, where we had relations both in the UK and over in Canada watching for news.

I only had the iPhone, and used Ping.FM to send updates to the various social media sites, and then sent the pictures via Flickr - the delivery room shots are the first few at http://bit.ly/1T0y9v - worth mentioning that what is there now are the high quality shots rather than the compressed pictures that the uploading options at that time produced.

Maybe next time around I'll have an iPhone that can do the video and sound record and audioboo as well, but it wasn't an option with what I had on the phone at the time.
