Scoble, I don't understand why you are so much surprised about the fact they don't host YouTube videos themselves. A flash player is basically a wrapper to a FLV file served by a Flash media server. The FLV file itself is just a video track plus an audio track using one of the Flash codecs.
A different player can be used to serve the same FLV file. And that's how you end up putting overlays and anything you fancy. That's how YouTube added their carousel view on the existing videos, without touching the videos.

So basically the difference with what was done in the days of ActiveX/Real/Quicktime videos back in early 90s is that it's now done in Flash.

Looks like this would have some great instructional applications.

Asterpiz is is what will make Hypervideo inportant and product linking like Microsoft has been experimenting with for a while http://adlab.msn.com/VHL/

Asterpix puts this in the publics hands .

Wow, why doesn't this seem like news to me? Maybe because I spent 5 years in the mid to late 90's working with Macromedia Director and Dreamweaver, and other tools that allowed hyperlinked areas from video, VRML worlds/scenes, and live linked floating invisible layers in webpages... What goes around (and was too heavy at the time we were developing) comes around....

And we shouldn't mention the fact that the first folks to get the hyperlinking working really well in a 3d environment (QuicktimeVR) actually stole the idea from a group of summer students at the University of Oregon in 93? 94? or so..... (Apple was sponsoring a summer program for nontraditional students then, and they brainstormed up the initial ideas and software, only to find it being released 4 months later, with no credit..)

Enabling hyperlinks inside videos is not a new idea by Asterpix. But Asterpix makes it easy for public users to make interactive videos. Everyone should try to make interactive videos at Asterpix, not just viewing, to understand why people are hyped up at its service.

Flash is a means to overlay images or videos. The key in Asterpix is it generates object tracks close to real time and sync these tracks with videos.
