Give Scoble a chance... If he can make MS half as evil as it is today - that will be a greater feat than anything Kawasaki can do in his entire life.
and still keep MS profitable ofcourse ;)

I fully understood what you meant in this post as it is something that happened to me approximately 8 months ago.
TDavid at MakeYouGoHmm.com did exactly to me what you are talking about and, obviously, I haven't forgotten about it. I thought it was really cool that # 1) he even read my blog and # 2) that he made a post to his own blog referencing a post on my blog. But, he did more than that. He went on to tell his readers that my blog typically isn't something he would normally read but he enjoyed it because it added a little variety to his feeds.
I'm not like most of your readers here, Robert. I am not into technology on the scale as most of your readers are and I consider my journal/diary blog to be not very different than so many other blogs like it out here on the net. That is why TDavid making a reference to it made a really big impression on me.

I read your blog for the simple fact that, more often than not, I learn something new every time I visit your site. Be it something you personally teach me or a link to another location where I discover something (or someone) new. I don't want to speak for you but I think this might be a little close to what your point is here in this post. Kind of like what TDavid did to me when he linked my blog. It was a total feel-good and I'll always remember him for it.

D. Wellington: unfortunately that's how I really feel. Steve Broback (founder of Blog Business Summit) asked me last week "how do you quantify influence of a blogger" and I said "you better forget about that and pay attention to the kid in Australia with 5 readers. He's gonna be the one to point out your product sucks, if it does, and he'll get found within an hour of his post."

You might also realize that I blogged for three years before joining Microsoft. You also might realize that when I did marketing for Winnov I remembered when anyone with any influence paid attention to us, cause it was so rare.

That's why I said that Guy should suck up to the unknowns. That's how he'll make his brand even bigger. Getting yet another link from me won't help him (and, might even do him some brand damage as the comments here point out -- everyone hates the guy on top).

This is the way I see it: Kawasaki teased Robert with his post. Robert, feeling vulnerable and slightly insecure because many of the blogger suckup techniques he has been using were being called out for what they were, gets defensive. Taking Guy's joke overly seriously, Robert attempts to score points against Guy by adopting a Holier-Than-Thou stance, appealing to the sentiments of the masses, and, therefore, making a faux attempt to defend the "little guys" (Really, since when has Microsoft been concerned the with welfare of the little guys? lol)

You have to understand what Scoble's blog is all about. It's an attempt by MS to simulate the type of grassroots buzz that other companies like Apple generate for free from their UNPAID users. Scoble attempts to build bridges with other potential opinion leaders (making them feel important) and attempts to appear reasonable and fair all so that whenever MS releases products and Scoble says how wonderful they are, everyone believes him. End of story. Give the guy a break, he's just trying to do his job.

I just do not understand the "hate Scoble" crowd. Good grief, would you people just go get a life somewhere, anywhere? The man is not a god, nor is he evil-incarnate. He's just a rather normal-sounding human being expressing his opinion about a variety of topics. So what's the big deal? Geez, get off his case. If you think he's got an ego as big as a continent... so what? Why do I care about your opinion? Go get your own blog, and spew your hate over there. I'd prefer to read some semi-intelligent comments without all the nastiness. Although because it's a free country, and Robert is kind enough to post your junk, even though he's under no obligation to do so, I guess I'll just have to endure it, anyway. Too bad...

If nothing else, you have proved what you keep saying all along.Bloging is the next level of marketing. Evenwith the last several post you have made, you keep getting hate comments like nobody else. This market you find yourselve in is as naked as anyone could be and yet your subscribers keep growing.
I agree with you you, if nothing else, you comment, you should have the whatevers to leave a return address so that everybody can comment back.

You do not need any encouragment Robert, your numbers speak for themselves.

What the pro-scoble, oh-my-god-the-outrage crowd needs to understand, and I think Mr. S has well understood it himself, is that the trolls (myself included on this thread) are a necessary evil: a) any controversy brings in the punters and b) without a 'negative' force there would be nothing to spur blogs like this on.

Per Guy's post, good thoughts, however the runaway product can blast away all that. But never with the dot.com Z,Y,X Spacey names.

But it's just basic branding, not sure why this Marketing 101 stuff is all a grand 'Road to Damascus' revelation for VCs and Bloggers. But anyone laser-focused on being first in the alphabet, doesn't have a good product to begin with; good enough product they will beat a door, no matter where you place yourself in the CES list.

Guy's been doing well for a novice blogger.

He's been blogging for less than 2 months and already has 1,567 sites linking to him in Technorati vs your 3793, and he isn't even out of google's sandbox yet. Is that some kind of record?

He may learn some tips on blogging from you but I don't think he needs you to teach him how to build a user movement.

Ah the egos of rich middle-aged white men...they never could quite free themselves from what Freud dubbed the 'mother complex'...thank god the red alternative is on the horizon, not that it will be any better, but at least it will bring change to the appalling white hegemony we have to put up with.
