Hey Rob welcome home. Don't blog but accidentally found this. I commute to Palo Alto and it takes 35mins. Amazing bike ride to work if you leave your car at Canada. You'll never feel better. What they don't tell you in Seattle is you have the best situation ever! HOT weather in Palo Alto and COOL crisp nights in HMB - its perfect! Don't tell people the secret - traffic is only bad on the weekends (when most people see it)... unless you live in El Granada where I'm told the AM commute is poor getting to HMB.

Top ten things to do in HMB -
1) Sneak into the Ritz Carlton Hot Tub w/ a bottle of wine
2) Learn to kitesurf and go to Waddell creek. One of the best spots in the world
3) Surf at Kelly ave. before work. (yes thats early but its why you live on the coast)
4) Hike above Montara beach
5) Order the southwest breakfast burrito at the coffee company
6) Brace for weird politics (like the town residents fighting over a park - what city doesn't want a park?)
7) A beer at the brewery by the outside fire pits
8) Mavrick's surf contest - get on a boat
9) Camp or lodge (if you must) at Costanoa
10) Enjoy the New Leaf market thats coming to town in 08.

Welcome to sunny California. My wife and I found a large loft space in Oakland to rent since my new, non-Microsoft job is in Emeryville. I don't envy your commute though. Picking my place where I did enabled the ten minute (!) of my dreams.

I was trying to get to HMB just today, however traffic going west bound was horrible this sat not sure why.

Also, my cousin is opening a japanese restaurant called Shiki --I'll take you there soon.

Just read your post on Half Moon Bay. As you and Maryam probably know, Highway 1 heading north from HMB is now the world's largest cul-de-sac. I've lived in Moss Beach for about 20 years now (just north, past the airport). My kids were born in San Mateo and have attended the local schools their entire lives -- my daughter just graduated from HMB HS a few weeks ago.

Anyhow, I'm sure there are plenty of people that will show you and Maryam around the town and hook you up with people here.

But just in case:

* The coastal trail walk from near the harbor in El Granda all the way to the Ritz Carlton is a good hike, especially when the weather is nice. And it does get glorious at times.
* Get an account at the Cunha grocery store in town. The people that run this family store are great people. And the selection is very nice. We've been buying most of our meat from the butcher there. Bev Cunha is a sweetheart.
* Go to Raman's for the best chai you've ever had. Seriously. Raman's is the place next to the Wells Fargo Bank (near the laundromat) in the shopping center where the Albertson's (soon to be former Albertson's).
* Bay Book in the Strawflower shopping center is great as well. It's an independent book store and well staffed with knowledgeable people that like to read.
* I like the Three-O (3-0) cafe at the airport. I've seen Neil Young there, and according to Mark (the guy that runs the place), Neil is not an infrequent visitor. Mark is a character as well.
* Ship-to-Shore at the harbor has a killer teriyaki tri-tip sandwich and the only potato salad my son will eat. It serves fresh fish, grilled, primarily. The owner/cook is a great and interesting guy as well.
* Cafe Capistrano, on Capistrano road across from Mezza Luna, is another favorite place for lunch. Try the crabmelt sandwich, especially during crab season.
* The Spanishtown restaurant in HMB has killer chicken soup.
* Half Moon Bay Sushi (Main Street Sushi) has been a favorite for 20 years now.
* The San Benito House sandwich shop and deli serves sandwiches on their homemade bread, along with homemade soup. This is a favorite of my daughter.
* Sunshine Doughnuts in the Strawflower center has killer doughnuts and eggrolls.
* And, of course, Tres Amigos on Highway 1. The best taqueria.

Anyway, there's plenty more, I love the place and have been doing the drive into places north and south, working in software, since the early 80s.

Welcome back to California! If you can hack the commute, half moon bay is a really nice place to live. I second Matthias' recommendation of Sushi on Main.

Arjun: I used Maryam! Heheh. She used a variety of tools, Zillow and others. I'll get her to report on that. We also have several family friends who are real estate agents.

And, coming from Seattle it'll feel just like home.

Either way, I will be working in Palo Alto so will see the sun then.

I hope they told you about the fog in Half Moon Bay... but otherwise it is great place to live. There is a good Sushi restaurant "Sushi on Main".
Welcome to the Bay Area and good luck with the house. I got lucky the third time when I was buying my house in Palo Alto last year.
