Ugly video player UI, other than that ... where do I sign up?!
  • Stefan Constantinescu · 2 years ago
I gave them my phone number twice, nada.
  • Robert Scoble · 2 years ago
Stefan: I put mine in on Saturday evening and got the invite 24 hours later.

Qik is something which should be a part of Nokia's Ovi service...
  • Tomi Itkonen · 2 years ago
    Heh. Correct link: www.ovi.com.

Just watch the IP and privacy issues stack up. Airport style searches at conference doors and everything off the record. Or maybe not.

My number is in and I'm anxiously awaiting my SMS...

I have been using the comvu pocketcaster service on my n95 the same sort of gig really but I will check out this one.
I get to run it over 3g here in the UK and even did one of our SL wimbledon press conference behind the scenes gigs with it.
I tried doing one of those california style driving on the freeway things.
The problem is, well this aint california. Usually the driving rain and stop star traffics does not make for a good shot ;-)
It did seem to be having some problems when I just checked epredator.tv, but I am sure it will be back

This has amazing implications for just-in-time learning as well. Dial up your guru, ask him/her to turn on the ol' cell, and see how it's done.

Your resolution was enough that I could even make out the screens pretty well.

    World-changing indeed.

Can it use your wifi connection to send the video or does it have to send over 3g?

Obviously wifi would be waaaay cheaper but I see no mention of it on the website.

    @Scobleizer,

Any limits on the Qik video size (file size or duration)?

I'm not sure conference organizers would appreciate you shaing conference content with people that haven't paid an entrance fee. Gotta believe this could be an issue.

If qik.com is smart they would simply use the twitter api to build that functionality into their application, then those of us that carry two cell phones (pretty much just Scoble and his big head ;) ) could do it all form the same device. Plus, they need to include commenting on the web page for each video, or better just include one of the many universal comment application providers out there. That we could all comment on Scoble shooting video of wasted friends! (all in good jest, don't eat anyones shorts!)

That was amazing Robert - chatting to you via Qik as you walked to the Apple store - mad! 11 p.m. here in UK and you were loud and clear though the person you were talking to was tinny as I said. Great fun!

Take a look on this - it works perfect in Germany with all mobile operators. Do you need only a standard 3G phone and it works - call a number and press video call, that's all! No software installation, no clients, no config - only call a number and let's stream to your Facebook and MySpace account. Unfortunately it works in the first phase only in Germany/Europe. best regards Daniel

As you can imagine we have received an overwhelming number of requests for invitation to the Alpha release of Qik. Thank you! We are working through these requests and will be in touch soon.

We are also working towards supporting other device platforms. If you’re interested in participating in an early release of Qik for these platforms - send us an email at support@qik.com along with the type of device that you are interested in.

To address a few questions that came up in the comments thus far:
    - It works with 2G, EDGE, 3G, 3.5G and WiFi and adapts it streaming based on the type of connectivity
    - There are no limits on the file size or duration of the stream

Feel free to contact support@qik.com for any questions you have.

so, how long did it take to receive the invite once you signed up? Like others, I've impatiently signed up several times with no invite to date, and it's been months! I want to put my new N95-4 8GB NAM to serious work! ;) Can anyone spread the love with an invite?
