Chris, I totally agree -- designers are wholly underappreciated. And a small fraction of it they bring upon themselves by choosing to be indignant rather than learn how to communicate the value they add to the process.

As an aside I couldn't help noticing Kevin Schofield's post. You who gets more undeserved crap than MS research? Designers (and not just at MS, but everywhere). You don't ask a doctor to pave your driveway or plumber to perform brain surgery but EVERYONE loves to tell a designer what to do. :)
I'll also admit that some of the prima donnas in the design realm bring this on themselves.

Robert...if you're interested in hanging out with filmmaker types, we are hosting some dinner roundtables at SXSW. The topic of conversation will be filmmaking, digital distribution and the changing expectation of a new audience. We are filming, editing and giving everyone who participates access to the video to use on their own sites...or in promotion of particular films. Dude, I'm really looking forward to catching up with you next week and showing you around the Techfest floor.

As to the person who said that our researchers "have little clue about how to make a product, create a business and ship" -- well, yeah. They're reserchers. Tech transfer is a partnership between our researchers and the super smart people in Microsoft's product groups. Researchers don't ship products. Developers don't do marketing plans. Testers don't write online help. Program managers don't run research projects. It's called specialization. I'd rather have a diverse, interdisciplinary team of people who are all world-class at their area of expertise than a team of jack-of-all-trades who are merely good at everything. Yes, there are challenges at getting interdisciplinary teams to work together but when you do it the result is amazing.

Robert -- 3.5 hours on I-35 puts me down in Austin, so let me know which days/nights you're going to be there (most likely only a chunk of the 9-day event, I imagine). Beckett is probably too young to do his first geek blog-up & SXSW road trip, but we'll see what his mom says as we get closer!

If you get the time, get one of your Austin guides to wisk you out of town for some real BBQ down at the Salt Lick: http://www.saltlickbbq.com/ About 20/30 min south of the city, but worth the drive. And you'll get a legit nod of approval from the locals, too, which is almost as good as a blog link (he smiles).

It could be worhtwhile to setup a big geek dinner at SXSW. I'm sure there are a lot of people that would like to meet you, myself included, and it would be a good way to have an opportunity to talk and interact in a nice informal setting.

There are a lot of good restaurants in Austin and I'm sure there are several that would be willing to set aside some space.

If you're interested, let me know. I'll volunteer to take care of the legwork of finding a location and handling RSVPs.
