This is the first time i am reading about sxsw. I tried to read about it at the site. But the site is not all that first-time-visitor friendly.:-(

Could someone do a ’sxsw in fifteen words’ for a common man like me?

ive been to SXSW and it can be fun. It can also be over whelming at first too. If you have never tried it i suggest get a friend and go check it out

Yes, any, yes, yes, no.

As a local, my preferences in order are:

Lockhart, TX: Black's for sausage, Smitty's for brisket, and Kreuz' Market for the legend (the first two did it for me, so I've never managed to make it there.) It's about a 45-60min drive and they close at 8pm. If you're driving that long just to get to the Salt Lick, drive another 15 minutes or so - the BBQ in Lockhart is far superior.

Ruby's (29th & Guadalupe, north of the UT campus): Not to be confused with Rudy's.

Iron Works (1st/Cesar Chavez & Red River)

Green Mesquite (S. Lamar & Barton Springs Rd.)

Artz Rib House (S. Lamar)

Salt Lick (Driftwood, TX) or Salt Lick 360 (Loop 360 just south of the bridge) if you want a cloth napkin.

Those who prefer vegetables or need a break from BBQ are directed to Casa de Luz (buried on Toomey just north of Barton Springs Rd.) It's macrobiotic but they do a great job.

Since everyone is hyped about Salt Lick and it sounds like there are a lot of free Sunday nights, how about a SXSW pilgrimage? 7:30 at Salt Lick? I'll have a car. (and would look forward to meeting anyone who's up for it...)

Laura and I will be in Austin Thursday through Thursday. We might have a car. Would love BBQ but a 35 mile drive might be a stretch.

Iron Works is very nice and walking distance from the convention center... It does get busy, though.

Hi Robert:
So far I'm free Saturday through Monday evenings.

BBQ - Yum. Let's definitely do barbeque. Just let me know when. I'm at the Hilton across from the Convention Center.
Car - 'fraid not.

Video Blogger - Yes, with the unique perspective of a screencaster. I'd love to do a panel with you. We can talk about how fun it was to do the photowalking/photoshop shoot.

Not sure of a barbeque place, but last year we went to a very cool outdoor beer and burger place called Hills Country Cafe, where I got to swoon over Kris Kristoferson up close. I think they're having the Texas Heritage Music Association awards there on Sunday.

Robert-

As the above comments indicate, Austin has great BBQ. However, if you get a craving for ribs or brisket between Texas trips, SV has 2 pretty good options: Uncle Frank's in Mountain View and the Texas Smokehouse BBQ in San Jose.

Hey, Robert -- I have a friend who moved to the south for the bbq. I am very envious of him. :-). The beer is good in the Northwest but the bbq does not match.

I can get a car. Easy. I'll drive. Heh. Saturday evening bbq? How good would that be? II'll bring along the M-Audio micro-track. Love that little gem. Video creation, distribution? That's what we are all about at SplashCast.

Robert - last year, a bunch of us rented this crazy bus and went to Salt Lick. It's a bit of a drive, but an interesting experience if BBQ is your top priority.
