John Edwards is... let's just be glad he's not in the White House. You think things are bad for the Internet under Bush, wait until the Democrats take the WH. The Internet will be taxed to death to pay for the Dems social programs.
What we need is a free Internet. Not in price, although that would be nice, but a tax-free Internet where people can share ideas, buy stuff, post their hopes and dreams, etc., without government intervention on a grand scale. The Internet is slowly being taken over by the government and really big business and it should never be this way. The Internet should always have the wild west feel and be self-regulating. My two cents. You don't have to agree.

Sadly, many ISPs throttle BitTorrent including mine, Rogers Communications (one or the two largest Canadian ISPs).
BitTorrent becomes pretty useless when running at dialup speed.

Robert, I'm a lifelong Democrat and would be much more inclined to campaign for John Edwards if he went beyond the mere trappings of geekdom. Even Warner Brothers has signed up with BitTorrent, so his mere use of P2P is hardly a be-all and end-all. I'm delighted you're giving Edwards his due on P2P, but it'll be great if you and other key bloggers also encourage him to speak out on the existing DMCA and the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act. He's been resolutely mute, even during a guest appearance on the Lessig blog. Don't let Edwards charm folks out of asking the obvious questions on his copyright stands. Thanks! David

I've learned over the years that voting either Democrat or Republican gets us nowhere. I really, honestly believe in this country we need a third party -- one that truly represents the people. The Democrats come closer than the Republicans, but in the end, they are still tied to big business. We need elected officials that will not be swayed by lobbying groups. We need, in my honest opinion, Democratic Socialism, pure and simple. Organized lobbying needs to be made illegal, illegal to accept campaign contributions from businesses, illegal to make deals with big business over the welfare of the people. Minimum wage needs to be raised to a minimum of $500 a week or $24,000 a year.

I don't think this will pull in many non-geek media creators trying to distribute to a few friends. BT works best when you have a solid stable of seeders contributing. Non-geeks are the most likely to unknowingly treat a BT download like any other and close the client after they have the file. So the creators are left holding the bandwidth bag. Square one.
RedSwoosh looks like it avoids all that though.

@10. How do you ensure all small businesses can afford to pay their employees $500/wk? Where will that money come from if the businesses can make it? Minimum wage laws do more harm than good in contributing to unemployment. I'm always confused by those that want to dictate how much money businesses should pay employees. Heck, why cap it at $24K? Why not make it more?

Everyone has the right to a living wage if the earn it. I live in an area where the average house costs 600,000+. Even townhouses here are 400,000+. How do you expect people that make minimum wage to ever realize the dream of house ownership in this country on crap wages. Wal-Mart is king of paying people next to nothing, demanding overtime without pay, and giving employees crappy health coverage. The first thing that needs to happen in this country is universal healthcare. Lie ot or hate it, it's the only fair way. A guy who makes minimum wage who needs surgery for something and cannot afford the bill since his health coverage sucks is likely to not get the needed surgery. There are 45,000,000 people in the US without health coverage. Health coverage should NEVER, EVER be tied to one's job. Universal health care is the only way with the government as the single-payer system. Doctors DO NOT deserve to make millions while their patients barely survive. Doctors should be forces to JUSTIFY why they prescribe drugs to patients, not just give them out in flurries of prescriptions to get kick-backs from the pharmaceutical companies (this is remapant, BTW).

Bittorrent only provides relief when many individuals are downloading the same material at the same time.
I am not sure Bittorrent delivery would help much with sites you indicate. If you have a large diverse group of material with downloaders scattered over the spectrum I don't think it would help(in fact it may be hindrance) -- it is not a cure all for overall lack of delivery bandwidth.

- Deke, this is probably not the place to debate this, however I just have one point. First of all, not all housing is in the extremes of 400-600k. I just bought my first house for 85k with a grant for a first time home buyer. Nice 4bd with a large yard.
Of course, no one making minimum wage will ever be able to afford a house in the 400-600K price range. Heck, I couldn't even come close with my current salary.
How do you make it out of poverty to afford the American dream of owning a house? Education.

@17, I believe, sir, you are living in the wrong country. All I asked is how you expect small businesses to pay for decreed increases in minimum wage? Where is their money going to come from to pay those wages? More revenue? How do they generated that? Is the government going to send them more customers? Or they could charge higher prices to fund this addtional "tax". But that would likely drive customers away. An employee is simply another resource a business uses to help it make money. Actually Edwards is sharing video using a service provider called MoveDigital. For example, MoveDigital's "Standard" service gives you 5 GB of storage and 100 GB of transfer, for $101 per year. (Additional data over the 100 GB transfer limit is charged at 79 cents per GB.)
Besides a standard download over HTTP, they've added the ability to provide a torrent link to your downloads. Their FAQ states that "the file transfers done by other users is [sic] FREE," but that must make for some confusing billing when part of a file is served by MoveDigital, and part from someone else. Presumably the files are always seeded by MoveDigital, so I'm not sure how much money would be saved by downloading via Bittorrent.
MoveDigital's offer of torrents doesn't make complete sense to me... on the one hand, their marketing materials brag about how their "unthrottled bandwidth" allows for "extremely high speeds," "the highest possible speeds" etc. ad nauseam; on the other hand, they give you the option of using Bittorent. Because sometimes "the highest possible speeds" aren't high enough, or what?
Anyway, I wouldn't assume that their use of MoveDigital means much of anything. It's just a download service, and one of the download options they offer is a torrent. I don't think you can read into it anything about Hollywood and the RIAA and What Does This Mean For The Democrats.
Likewise I don't think it means that Edwards "gets it" or is "technologically literate." For all I know Edwards can't even spell "Bittorent."

I went to the video blog section and who do I see there? Bre Pettis and Amanda Congdon. The text only identifies Pettis as "a viewer from Seattle." Pettis, of course, has been on Rocketboom several times, and Amanda Congdon interviewed Edwards on Rocketboom. So now on Edwards' site, we've got more Bre Pettis. And more Amanda Congdon, and more John Edwards.
So it looks like the future of video blogs is three people interviewing each other. Maybe that's why Edwards' site is called "OneAmerica?" :-)

If Hilary Clinton was to become president, I would seriously consider moving to Europe or Canada. I'm dead ly serious. She's dangerous, far too liberal, and EXTREMELY partisan, more so than Bush. THe thing about the Democrats that angers me is they claim to want to help people, but when they inevitably raise taxes as all Democrats are wont to do, rarely does that money ever see the light of day. The democrats accuse the Republicans of being anti-education, but in the eight years Clinton was in office, the public school system didn't get better -- it got worse. ???... ISPs could stifle access to sites that allow bit torrent. What's going to happen is you're going to see a fair amount of encrypted file sharing and other under-the-radar stuff. More power to stuff like Waste and other methods of transferring content. Remember, what you transfer is up to you and your intended recipient only (spam excluded, of course). THe ISPs or the government should have no control over anything to do with file sharing or content swapping.
