Yes this is one of the reasons FB annoys me, it is MY social graph, my time and energy, I want to export it.
We have all scraped for years on various platforms, so FB is not "new" in getting heavy, they obviously want to keep us all in.
Trouble is walled gradens typically get emulated at some point in an open environment, it's inevitable, I'm sure they must realise that.

Hope they get you back on. It's a hard one this, deciding who owns the data. Technically your friends own their data, but on the other hand they've trusted you to have it. The only reason Facebook don't have an export function is probably a competition/lock-in thing. Maybe they're also worried about denial-of-service as a result of people running scripts?
Heck, even Gmail has an open API for getting contacts from it (though it's not working on Twitter at the moment :( ).

@NeilBarnwell - It's not hard at all, *you* own your own social graph. It's not so much the people or even data about them that makes it special its the relationship between them thats special, and again, yours.

Roo: no. That's part of my job to see how good their terms of service are, and how well enforced they are. Also, to point out when terms of service suck. In Facebook's case its competitors don't have the same stupid TOS and let you take your social graph with you wherever you want. In fact, its competitors don't have a lame technical limitation which limits me to 5,000 friends either. But that's another topic.

Sounds like a bit of feedback to the developers of the software to insert some timing delay's into the loop.
I would personally recommend loops with a minimum delay of 45 seconds, loosely ranging up to 5 min then a few longer delays along the lines of 1, 2, 8 and 12 hours.The longer delays should be fairly infrequent, but would give a better approximation of an active user, vs. a script.
Yes it will take longer to run than a quick script that scrapes 100 pages or so, but it still should run through 4999 relationships in about a week
This is the classic Web 2.0 conundrum: users give their information for free to a service, which then monetizes that information, keeping all of the money for itself.
In its benign form, this works because the service that the users get has more value than the information they give. However, the malignant form of this - and Facebook is not the only culprit - then attempts to lock users in to the service by making it impossible to take the information elsewhere.
The point is that services such as Facebook have to recognise that they don't own the information which makes their service valuable.

I was banned in December and *still* am not sure for what. No scripts, nothing unusual...other than being participatory in the system that they created (I used their email, invited people, wrote on walls, etc.) They didnt even give my photos, videos, or contact information back - some of my business contacts were made and maintained on facebook so I have no way to recover them. I complained and they simply replied that the ban was permanent.
I was one of their biggest fans...now I've joined the growing chorus of detractors. Their own hubris will be what brings them down.

It seems they are cool with a human being going through his own information on their site. So it appears the trick to running a script to scrape such a site is to run it with pauses so it looks like a human being.

All very interesting. Facebook have a lot to prove in 2008. Its advertising system - you know, the one where they promised the "once every hundred years, media changes" thing - is showing signs that it might be broken from a commercial perspective.
Given that, the company has to show it has some ideas about how to take targetted advertising forward at large scale; that is with a credible path to annual revenues of $5-10B in the next two to three years (with continued rapid growth after that). And while they're executing on their plan, they have to avoid becoming irrelevant.
From the position the company is in now, all this could be a pretty big challenge. Alienating users really isn't the way to build confidence that they know what they're doing...

@Neil Barnwell: If I'm memory serves me right then in the early days of Facebook a facility was built into Facebook to allow the exporting of your friends' contact information. This was subsequently removed.
I find this to be a bit annoying because I am one of the many users who rarely, if ever, adds someone that I don't know in person. Having people maintain their own contact information for sync'ing with Outlook and subsequently my cell phone is a killer feature. Unfortunately we aren't allowed to do that.
In a recent Slashdot story, I voiced contempt for Facebook's meaningless notification messages and suggested finding workarounds using open-source tools to add the missing functionality. The comment was moderated to the top. Either Facebook's employees have been reading Slashdot or other users have complained about this issue because (coincidentally) the text of both wall messages and private messages is now emailed out. Maybe Outlook sync'ing will be the next hurdle they conquer after reading this?

But what of the people who join Facebook BECAUSE it's such a walled garden? Yes, we all have some issue with Beacon - but the reason we have an issue with the Beacons of the world is because we fundementally DON'T want someone wholeheartedly using our graphs.
Especially not a friend, who we trust to not do that.
So while I agree with some fundamental arguments people are making here, we can't rail against Beacon with one side of the mouth and then support someone using a script to lift my social graph for outside use without me knowing.
I guess what I'm asking is: do we really want a walled garden or not?

Although I've read (and blogged) about FB's TOS, I still think that we own our words until we sell them (like writing for a company that pays you for your work). As the exchange on FB is having a free platform to connect and post but not actual payment for your words, I'm not sure there's true equity there. But that's just my opinion.

What was the information your application was after? You're asking people to 'give an opinion' on this, I'm assuming you are, but you're not saying what kind of information you were scraping.
The TOS covers some areas where we wouldn't want an application to scrape the contents, including others' message, contact info, and so on. That's what creates a thing called 'spam'.
Either you're accessing your own information, which we assume you have already. Or you're accessing information about other people, and they have a right to know this information is being ported outside of this application. Did you ask all your 5000+ friends if your interaction with them, and their info can be pulled from Facebook and placed into some other app?
As for 5000+ friends -- you must have a been a lonely kid, that you have to have so many 'friends'.

I have been annoyed by Facebook many times, and could care less what happens with it (I will just move to another, better social network). But when you have already established friends, and groups, that's such a pain in the ass that I'd rather they changed their TOS.

It all depends on what you're scraping the data for, and what you're using it for. Transportation to another system, sure, public use, nope.
You can take it with you, but you can't publish it, give it to a third party on another system? Arguably no(by that I mean make my phone number visible to everyone else on another system, not use a program that stores data you have collected similar to a gmail contact list or the sort).
I gave you and Facebook my information, I didn't you, however, permission to republish my data, only to use it personally.

You're now listing things presumably you were using the script to gather, but my point is that I don't know how innocent the information is that you want. You ask about my name-- I have some friends who are artists who use pseudonyms and they are not searchable in Facebook, so yes- they actually do covet their names. Birthdays? Certainly you know the issues with credit card fraud and complete birthdays.
I'm sure you have a very reasonable and innocent, possibly even practical and helpful, reason for wanting whatever info you want. But some people rely on their privacy and don't want their data ported. I'm not one of them, at least not about all my info, but it seems to me we need to be careful about the straw man of, "but I could just do this..." - That's the same argument employers used when they'd hire student interns of a particular college to scope out potential employees when Facebook was college only. You certainly could just write down things on paper and build your own. That doesn't mean your friends would have given you good-faith permission to do so.
There is an inconsistency here. While you seem willing to violate Terms of Service for online applications (this Facebook violation and a prior violation with Second Life), others seem willing to trust you with Non-disclosure Agreements. If you are on "auto-accept" when it comes to terms and conditions, why should anyone trust you?

fp: they shouldn't trust me. But breaking contracts has very real consequences. I had hundreds of hours of work in my Facebook account. That's a very real amount of money/time gone and a distribution channel gone for me.
If I break an NDA I'll ruin relationships, etc and possibly end up in court. Both of which cost me time/money/opportunity.

There is a silver lining. Now users know how to get their Facebook profile deleted. A pal of mine was trying to close his Facebook account, and he was told that it is not possible. They own the data. He told me there is no apparent way to kill your account and have all data removed. So now we know: Just run a script and get banned. :)

You still have those hundreds of hours there, they are just in limbo as you are "disabled" - sort of like having a fan page unpublished. They can flick the switch and you'd be back on.
And some would argue that breaking social contracts has consequences too- just not always legal ones. This whole discussion may be as much a wake up call to only friend closer-to-the-vest "friends" and for people to stop friending relative internet personalities who accept everyone. Maybe this is a MySpace moment when it dawns on some that every one of their 1,000 close personal friends are neither and that because of unknown intention, a pruning begins.

Plaxo lets you sync your contact data to your local system, plus it has a really cool 'newsfeed'-like tool called Pulse which (for contacts who enable it - it's opt-in) shows when they've posted a blog post or Flickr pic or Del.icio.us link or whatever. It's way better than Facebook's 'newsfeed' which is pretty much all useless info. And you choose what you share with your contacts, and you can filter it by designating which groups of contacts see what info and so on. It's pretty sweet.
Yes yes, I know Plaxo used to be evil and spammy. Not so much anymore, and the Pulse thing is really not to be missed. (And no, I don't work for Plaxo.)

Taking one of your comments a step farther, would it violate their terms of service for you to outsource the same functionality you were trying to automate to a service provider in India or somewhere similar to do it manually? It would be an interesting face-off (pun intended) as they try to lock down your info and you manually - and I hope LOUDLY - work your way around it.
If they let you do it manually and they let a weak version exist - the CSV app - they not letting a power user implement a power tool is just silly.

Corporations need to realize that negative comments about them are now easily retrievable by consumers and others, including competitors. Using Facebook as an example, the Jon Swift story helped to ensure that I will never join Facebook ("Ontario Emperor" is not my birth name, so Facebook obviously doesn't want me). As is evident by the fervor of comments here and the deluge of twitters and I am sure emails you are receiving, the idea of data and identity portability is a charged issue.
I agree with a lot of others here that as these various social networks evolve and mature, users seek to unify their identities online and try to make cohesive their various social communities. Getting access to the data that makes up your FB social graph is a step in that direction and even though I am sure you are whirling in all of this buzz now, your experiences here and endorsement of open sourcing efforts could go a long way to hopefully allowing social networking and how we all experience them to evolve.
I offer up my support and any other resources if you have need for them in all of this.

When I first joined facebook, before the 'rush' I was leery of yet another site wanting a ton of information I didn't believe they needed. What the got from me was name, email, birthdate, and the minimum of info required to sign up. That's it. No importing contacts, no personal info. I didn't even add any friends - just used it to allow me to click on other peoples' FB accounts whenever I'd get the "I've got a FB!" emails. So it was with relief when the whole Beacon issue came to light that I 'suspended' my profile knowing that at least FB didn't have any information outside of the minimum... they can't keep what they don't have.
But who cares about nameless, faceless little ol' me? Now, the world notices if FB pulls stuff against you, Robert - and that's all to the good. Because their TOS and attitudes toward our data is reprehensible... You don't get to make money off of my information and then refuse to let me have access to my information.
It will be nice to see when FB either finally gives up on their "mineminemine" attitude or goes the way of so many other irresponsible sites.

So if you had simply run the script with a random delay of approx 10 seconds between page accesses, you would have got all of the data - it just would have taken longer (around 14 hours for 5000 contacts).

Robert, I support you in your dealings with Facebook, especially after all the positive PR you've given them. Your situation is a *beacon* (pun intended) for all of us, and it's good to find out about dataportability.org. In addition to the data portability issue and their 5000 friends limit, the annoying FB apps that require you to spam your friends in order to add them, and their limit on no. of groups you can join, it took Facebook customer service staff a week to reply to me recently when my profile would not load. There are other people with the same problem who are still waiting for a response. When I got one, it was two sentences telling me what I already knew, that my profile wasn't working and they were fixing it—with no date by which I could expect it to be available to me, and no explanation. When it finally loaded again, FB had removed one or two of my apps.
Facebook clearly does not think our data belongs to us. I have also been locked out of being able to log in to my MySpace account for over six months and have not been able to delete it either, with no response from MySpace "customer service," so it's just hanging there for eternity, a frozen MySpace account. I once wrote about how Facebook was so much better than MySpace, but I won't any more, until Facebook changes its ownership policies. Robert, I hope your experience, and your friends' lobbying for you via other social networks, blogs, Seesmic, etc., will open up a new discussion on this issue with Faceook—but will they listen and change anything? That question remains to be answered.

When you're registering to facebook (or to any other service) you sign a contract (usually called 'terms and conditions'). If you do something which you shouldn't do according to this contract, the service provider (facebook here) will do what is necessary (disable your account here).
Depending on what you've done they may sue you legally or they'll just close your account. I don't see anything more natural.
I don't understand the philosophical (or political) talks about 'who owns the data'. You sign a contract and you should forget that. Who owns the data is another thing.

I think its a legitimate thing to lobby Facebook to open up their data. I think that its unfortunate that it appears that you're proud of violating the TOS. Watching Loren Feldman's video, I think you've really opened yourself up to an attack that probably isn't accurate but will leave many folks in doubt.

You sign an agreement when you join Facebook and you more than most should know what that means.
Other people connect with you on the basis of that agreement, you violated their trust.
You don't own the data, it is a shared resource between your contacts (I wont call them friends), you and Facebook.
Take the rap and grovel or do the honest thing and move on.
The last thing we need is more spammy applications harvesting our data, why do you think 60 million people signed up to Facebook because they didn't want another MySpace or Plaxo.

Just in case anyone is still reading this deep in. TOS are a contract, you need to abide by them whether you think they rock or not. Yes, it sucks, yes you've added value and they are making a profit off it. In any scenario where you are joining a network you add value, by getting a phone number you're joining a network and adding value - the value of a network is in its members. You've added value, your friends have added value, now you want to take that value out of the system. Game Over.

Scoble, I think you're being either disingenuous or at the very least, inconsistent, regarding what legal contracts you appear to be interested in adhering to.
You say you don't break NDAs because they are legal contracts and could get you into legal hot water and hurt business relationships. But the Facebook TOS -- which you agreed to when you signed up for the account -- is also very much a legal agreement. You broke it, they saw you broke it and disabled your account.
It's that simple. To complain about it after-the-fact shows either that you don't care about other people's legal agreements with you, or that you care, but will break the rules when it suits your purposes anyway.
In either case, you look like an idiot and I'm sure these kinds of continuing actions (willful disregard for legal agreements) will make people rethink their ongoing business relationships with you.

What I think is odd is that you can access all the information manually but you just can't screen scrape it to automatically build a detailed social graph.
There are various FB opt-in applications out there so until teh API opens up more this is the only way ... sigh.

You got kicked out, that's kind of sad. ;) They don't seem to like power users that want to do more with system than what it is designed to do. Mayby you put too much stress for their servers but still, automated account “disabling” and removing is kind of bad thing. Of course, without that kind of automation Facebook would be more full of automated bots that collect people's information for other databases...

been there done that... and I got little sympathy from people. The worst was that in my case they didn't even tell me what their issue was. I figured they didn't like my artwork or something... I always push the edges as well. It turned out it was that they didn't like my 6000 name email list. They are real sticklers about it. MySpace is a lot nicer with those issue. If you want to market... do it through MySpace and leave you facebook badge.

I applaud Robert for trying to take information off a slightly fascist little corral known as FaceBook shared with him freely by his own contacts ..The underpinning attempt to corral Users of the site by FB with all their strange offers of this and that and "poking" and god knows what else, partly conceals a constricting model struggling for viability in an environment which also partly favours freedom's street...You note, on freedom's street people can advertise around you and shout out their goods for sale and there is no doubt it happens everywhere but sharing information with you is your right of conversation. The digitalisation of this conversation information presents some problems if extracted from their storage but I cannot see any harm here...And frankly this corralling tendency and "branding" of people I hope gives way to people understanding that sticking to one spot is a recipe for exploitation and having your cowhide roped and branded ...

Scoble has 5000 facebook friends and he hammered on their server with a script to retrieve said friends' info - of course he got auto-banned, if they didn't automatically kick anyone doing that, their servers would collapse under spam address harvesters in well under a week.
He can do the same job slowly, whether automatically or by hand, and they'd neither know nor care.
They reinstated him as soon as he promised not to do it again, mostly because he has a reasonably significant audience.
Of course, having come to the attention of "admins", *then* issues of data ownership, terms of service and personal beliefs or urges come into any ensuing dispute. TOS are, like all one-sided contracts everywhere, crafted to let the contract-writer off the hook while retaining for the contract-writer maximum flexibility to exploit the content providers, i.e. the punters.
Promises of confidentiality or protection of "personal data" are as empty and meaningless, as anyone with half a brain should be able to discern, as the punter's "agreement" to, e.g. provide their correct date of birth. Anyone who gives a correct date of birth to Facebook is an idiot, in my opinion. Once your info is on facebook, rest assured that it's freely available to anyone who really wants it, friend or foe. I'd be very surprised if facebook didn't archive all changes you've made to your profile, ever, and hang on to 'em in case they turn out to be in some way saleable.
As to the fickleness of admins, again this seems pretty much to be expected.
As with other inflated-value data harvesting operations on the 'net, *online*, Facebook appears to be administered day-to-day by kids, who do what kids always do when put in charge of something - they turn into pissy little megalomaniacs. This has happened with a lot of fast-growing online forums or services.
They start off ill-equipped for big business, they compound the problem by having to hire quickly and indiscriminately to cope with exponential growth, the numbers rapidly rocket through "scary" to "unimaginable" and folk in suits (hoping to turn a fast buck on the stock) will follow the founders practically to the door of the bankruptcy courts telling them how untouchably rich and great they are.
Smart and lucky ones cash in and get out while the going is good and the stock good and inflated. Some probably start up explicitly to attempt this, but what seems to sell well is a sort of more or less genuine initial naivety and idealism, so this has become a predictable pattern for internet success stories.
(Punters don't like to feel sold-to or exploited, but the most hardened idealists start to re-assess their ideals in light of millions of dollars.)
Google *appear* to be attempting to be different (not necessarily better or less sinister), but I think there's a recognition in the (financial) industry that google's value is inherently longer-lived than fashion-led success stories like facebook. Facebook can go to the wall anytime and major investors will still be happy, since they don't expect it to last anyway.
Naturally, this is just my opinion...

All this comments as great as your post. I have understood significance of free data export in social project. I'm running one startup - gettingtasksdone.com And it's was not so hard to implement export of users data. The main problem was in my mind.
Robert, At least they removed all traces of you (that actually is a good thing) and didn't try to keep your information or likeness for their profit.
I was kicked off of a site, ERE.net - No, I didn't break their TSA agreement, and the owner, the guy who kicked me off, well based upon what he told me, he doesn't Remember exactly what I did wrong either.
So, 8 Years of My information, 8 Years of Comments, Members of Groups and networks, My personal Groups that I created, and acknowledged in ERE's media Kit as being some of the more popular, as well as articles I wrote, are stuck on this site, and I DON'T EVEN HAVE ANY ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION.
Here is an even more interesting story. Used to be that one could type in my last name (uncommon name) and the word ERE as a search string, and it would bring 60k+ hits; well in LESS than 2 weeks, it now brings up 1700 hits in google. It appears that they are Blocking Me Access to MY information via Google as well. 60k - 1700 in LESS than 2 weeks, that is a bit more than coincidence.
Okay, so let's bypass censorship, let's even bypass TSA agreements, which many won't hold up in a court of law for being totally vague, and incomplete.. (which I Did NOT break)
Let's look at OWNERSHIP of material, and loss of said materials. What should be considered Non Exclusive Rights - which means that the Author has some rights and the publisher also has some rights
So what are those rights? No, a company doesn't have the Automatic Right to Edit or remove another's PUBLISHED information w/o allowing them full access to that said published information.
Now let's also go back to TSA agreements. Many of these companies think that they can Unilatteraly Change their terms of Service in the Agreements w/o EVER Publicly telling their users, and not gaining their Consent. That is NOT the Case. All Parties MUST be aware at the time of Change if they want to continue or agree with the Terms of Service, and the information must be made Publicly for an extended period of time..
There are so many other issues that appear with these social networks, and It is time that we as the public really become aware of OUR rights in this process. What Do WE own, what RIGHTS do we have, and for sure, how do we go about maintaining those rights
re: tony's comment (37), my sister got banned from facebook about 6 months ago for no stated reason. She emailed them continually but eventually gave up. Then suddenly, on Jan 3, her account was reinstated (she only discovered it when I emailed her to tell her she was back in my friends list).

I am with Facebook / Shelley and a few others on this - what you are doing may not have been wrong, but I want FB to protect me from potentially malicious actions, they stopped potentially malicious actions (it may not just have been your friends, but people with open profiles etc..).
Sometimes I post things in Facebook that are literally only for my friends, if my potential future employers / family (i.e. grandmother) / others saw them well - it might not be the best career move. Whilst I am sure what you were doing did not have a "sinister" motive, you now can no longer publish email addresses (or even mobile telephone numbers) on websites without it being spammed.
I feel Facebook are in the right, just tell them what you were trying to do! They are allowing an export application... so its not like they are being "evil".

Facebook deleted me, because I'm an attractive male. I was using the "Are you interested" application that allows people to let me know if they are interested or attracted to me. When they click on me I'm alerted of their interest. There is a default message, with a link to the "Are you interested" application, that can be sent as a reply, and to say hello to the admirer. After putting this application up on my page, I had an overwhelming response, and replied to every person who had clicked on me. They DELETED ME FOR THIS. I didn't make this application, and if they don't want me using it, then why was it there? Why am I being penalized because people found me interesting? FREAKS.

Digg disabled my account after posting an article about some spam I received. The story was funny and harmless, I did not breach any rules. All my articles were about IT security, anyone could see. Than all my emails to Digg support were ignored completelly. Traffic dropped 90% in the next days. For about 2 months I posted messages asking someone, anyone, to review this thing... In three months I was alone on the blog. I had to change domain and Digg account and start all over again after 1 and a half years of blogging.

And while you're thinking give a small thought to the fact that the internet is inherently insecure (every packet of data you send out contains both your I.P. and MAC addresses) this coupled with site tracking scripts, WHOIS and other tools, owners of websites and web apps know more about you than you think, including your country, ISP etc.

My account was disabled, according to a facebook rep by the name of "C" because facebook has that discretion. So your account can be disabled simply because an employee feels like giving you grief.
Not good! But people are beginning to address this and in time facebook may suffer with loyal members finding other ways to create community.
See what she wrote below when I ask her the definition of "real name"!

So Lauren Bacall, George Baker, Anne Bancroft and any women that is married would have their facebook disabled even though that is their "real" name simple because some "not-too-bright" rep felt on whelm it was appropriate to do so.

I'm just an avid user who had his account diabled for no reason whatsoever...I'm extremely upset about it as I had fun playing he ' fluuf friends ' online application, and had invested alot of time and MONEY into it, only to havemy account disabled for no reason. Sending to many messages they claimed, yet I barely even sent any. Do you happen to havea contact # for them or a way in which I can converse with the admins who shut it down? My brothers a computer guy..when we were kids he was 11 and programming stuff on the first apple computer remember that? Then me and my other brother would check to see if the games were done..Im not sure exactly what he was doing on that computer since it was just boring numbers //!@3#$ like that..but he made some wicked games on that thing.He married a computer girl and now they live happily ever after with their massive computer room..When he found out my mother was on facebook he got her to get off it right away..and i had a big lecture from my mom bout facebook and what he said..viruses..and stuff..yeh.. they deleted my account for no apparent reason and i was just on it for a day.but then i opened another with a differnt email address and closed one and reopened one because my family are facebook haters but my bro might of forgot what it was like as a kid to program whatever so these kids out of college program a thing and it becomes huge and corporate america wants a piece of the pie and these kids are rich and our data is stuck in thier machines wwhich i guess kinda rips its like if some kid came over to my house when we were young and put a joystick in front of the computer and my brother made a better game and then told the kid to get lost even though it was his joystick and then my bro raked in the dough from charging other kids to play the game..although its evil im still his sis and would enjoy the toys and publicity from it all especially at the age of five..I learnt alot from this page and i think im gonna call my bro for the final anaylsis..but then in the end my friens are all on facebook and so am i its easy to use..and im not sure i want to hear his answer since he is a facebook hater like all things though i believe facebook is just a trend alot of people are getting bored with it i give it a few more years and someones brother or sister is gonna come up with something bigger and better..i hope its my brother but if not i hope someone will develop a new game that all my friends will jump over to..facebook..yawn...their new applications and advertising are pretty boring too..of course this opinion is just coming from a computer techs little sis thats loves trying out new stuff that computer techs make its just hard when tech people fight over programs and stuff i hope this all blows over so we can have harmony in the interface world and just as when i was young my eyes will light up and ill get all excited over whatever someone develops Im bored someone please make something new so i can get off facebook im trapped in facebook and theres nothing new to go to come on allready make it snazzy and lots of wham and bigger and better and more improved with the options of wall garden and whatever else that thing was called till then ill be trapped in facebook waiting ..

Essentially, it’s just like any other type of union. If one of us gets banned unfairly, we all stop using the site. They have to listen to the masses…
Many of us here are highly influential individuals, and we should all agree on the following: 1) Convicted individuals need a way to plead for their innocence and individuals who are not in violation of any rules should have restored accounts. 2) All rules should be stated clearly on the site, and non-damaging first-time violations of rules that are not made clear should be dealt with through a warning.

Honestly, facebook is extremely or unneccesarily paranoid. Whats the worst that could happen? I rather think its a cover, and they simply do not have the funds to handle the extra bandwidth. I can tell you all right now that Myspace is much better in this regard than facebook. And I will be telling everyone I know on facebook who already hasnt, to migrate on over to Myspace. This behavior is absolutely intolerable and the best way to get back at them is to take their users away!

Hi, my Facebook account also being disabled when I trying to add some friends yesterday, I think I am adding a friend at a normal rate but the system still prompts "Slow down or you will hit a block", it is happened once two days ago but when I trying to add friends again yesterday, same message prompted again and again....It never disappeared even I wait for one day and continued. And then my account was finally being disabled when I added friends yesterday....I guess that message may only lead to the function of "Add to friends" being temporarily disabled instead of my account. But now the account is disabled. If that message means account being blocked, so I surely would not add friends that fast. I never spam to the system and I am only a normal user. I think that message is quite ambiguous to the end users. It would be easily blocked in Facebook, I have no idea on when or will my account be recovered and also whether my friends will still remain exists or not. I am still waiting for their reply that being sent yesterday...I could do nothing now, below is my message to Facebook. Hoping that my account could be resumed ASAP...

Somedays, I wish all my social media accounts would be disabled because they take too much time. This reminds me of the three blogspot blogs I had that Google terminated without explanation. Perhaps writers should take care when building someone else's site and spend more time on their own blogs.

Don't waste your time at Ning either... the exact same thing happened to me there.
Why?
My guess is that these kinds of web sites are either too stupid or too cheap to employ someone to mediate these kinds of disputes. They make more money that way by saving costs, right? At least in the short run...
Disputes are human... normal... to be expected.
But ignoring users with a problem is an ignorant way of handling this kind of issue.
Anyone smart enough to address this problem out there?
Facebook apparently doesn't do it... Ning certainly doesn't either, in my personal experience. Be VERY careful with Ning!
Makes for ample room, though, for smarter competitors, I would imagine...

Facebook will NOT reinstate my account. Apparently the decision is final. I have replied to them as I need to gain access to my contacts list. Below is the message I received today....

Alot of you are missing the point here!
There is a big difference between applications/services that scrape your information for their use and a application that allows a user to take their data and use it somewhere else.
The bottom line is that all this information belongs to Scoble. The connections, content, page views, etc - were all created by Scoble. Facebook just provides an interface and storage solution for the users data - and they get paid for that via advertising. None of this content, and therefore facebook, would not exist if the users don't create it. A user should be allowed to do with that data what he pleases.

My account was disabled by FaecBook with out properly assigning any reason. All my details, contacts, emails, pictures and conversations gone with in no time, i requested, appealed but no way.

File a complaint with the BBB. Facebook has an unsatisfactory record with the BBB. And keep spreading the word about their totalitarian policies. I've seen soft porn on their site and reported it and the soft porn is still there. I've also seen fake names and individuals using facebook to advertise their business on their profiles (both prohibited), but that material is still there. They disabled my account for no apparent reason and ignored my inquiries. I filed a complaint with BBB, so let's see what happens.

Your story helps me understand why my AIM-AOL imap e-mail account was closed. I drag-n-dropped a few thousand messages from another imap account into it via Thunderbird, and I suppose the rapidity of the uploads alerted its monitoring software to the the probability that I was running a script. Presto - the Aim account was terminated, and I can find no avenue for appeal. Now I have no AIM account. Pity!

My Facebook account got disabled about a week ago; same reason Sabastian above says. Lost contact with my old school and uni mates etc.
On top of it my ancestry records and family photographs going back to early 1800s and research going back to 1200s, 1690s and early 1700s.
The only thing I did was update people on what was happening in Zimbabwe (referring to ABC Australia links) and commentry on the need for more moderation and understanding on Avaaz site.

Message for Mark Zuckerberg founder of Facebook
Morning Mark, from Brisbane Australia.
I came across your name on a site Techsideup relating to a story “Facebook Founder Gets Adult Supervision”, that Marc Andreesen had become your personal mentor.
I then looked at some of the seemingly randomly disabled Facebook accounts by Facebook admin staff (including mine – see above) on Scobleizer.com
It seems to me that young inexperienced Facebook staff are playing judge, jury and executioner in making these seemingly random decisions.
I am extremely analytical and perceptive. This is no way to run a business.
Facebook staff need a broader view on life. Facebook is coming across as religious right wing extremist, which is not an “average” view of the world which you should be! Because that is the debate I was portraying and it seems some the other good folk that have been disabled.
I look forward to a positive response from Facebook Admins with regard to my Facebook account being reactivated (see reasons above).

I have now had positive outcome from Facebook.
I believe while it is an organisation that has grown quickly, they have not got their "back office" operations under control.
Some younger staff do not understand/comprehend some of the debate or the valuable role we play using Facebook as a medium to communicate eg. whales/Zimbabwe/nuclear/religious debate.
I wish Facebook well and am pleased to be back and operating.

I’ve tried everything, but nothing seems to work.ive sent about 10 Emails to all the Facebook Emails and never got a respond. I really hate feeling so helpless and that I cant do anything about it but sending the Facebook Costumer Services Emails and asking for help. I mean COME ON! I am not the only one who has this problem! It’s a 1 in a 1000000 chance that they would help ME (I was never lucky to get that much of attention). I really feel like a dumbass that I actually hope that my Emails to them would change anything. This would probably be the 11th time I tr to get their attention, but I doubt it. If I could only get them on the phone, and know that someone is taking care of it. Ill keep searching and if I find some helpful way to get them just to listen ill let you guys know.

It was after a day on 22/1/1009 that i logged ino facebook and found that my account has been disabled by an administrator. My facebook page was mysteriously disabled without any warning - like others, I too, tried to log on and found out I was "disabled." I have done absolutely nothing to warrant this AND find there is NO recourse. I, too, have e-mailed facebook several times and never a response. I know this question is redundant BUT is there any recourse? Perhaps this is something a curious press person could look into...give Facebook a bit of their own medicine with some highly publicized, well-deserved comments about their "customer service" or, rather, lack thereof. What's the point of telling people they can "click here" to inquire as to why the account was disabled and, ultimately, one's query goes into a black hole of no response...

My account was disabled on Facebook multiple times. I had posted too many news stories and they considered it spam. Then I tried to share something via a group in an email and they considered that spam so they disabled me. I discovered delicious so I haven't gotten into trouble since I did that.
I was on there bad list because they kept disabling me. I guess if you are a rebel then you are banned. They should tell you when you hit the limit and how many stories are considered illegal.

After having my account disabled by Facebook over a month ago and receiving nothing more as an explanation than a general copy of the Facebook TOS sent by someone named 'Jada' in User Operations citing no specific violation and reason for my account being disabled. Daily inquires to the plethora of @Facebook.com email aliases published online have resulted in no response from anyone at Facebook.
I'm just a normal person, with roughly 30 friends who uses Facebook to share vacation photos and stay in touch with friends and family. Hardly sounds like malicious activity and grounds for having my account disabled, does it?
'Jada' has asked me to choose a new security question--twice. Yet my account goes on disabled. This reeks of a phishing scam despite the communications coming from @Facebook.com. Inquiries to other Facebook aliases have gone unanswered.
A quick Google search quickly reveals that I am but one of many thousands of people who have had their Facebook account disabled without warning, explanation or remedy. Add to that Facebook's unresponsiveness to my inquires to effect a resolution and they have become a poster child for egregious business practices. It's a typical technology David and Goliath tale where the market leader holds customers hostage with no ability to bring about a successful resolution to the errors produced by Facebook's erroneous algorithms that determine which accounts are flagged for disablement.
Let Zuckerberg and Facebook continue to turn a blind ear to it's customers. Hopefully, disgruntled Facebook customers will rally together and jump ship to friendfinder or some other social networking application that actually encourages social networking versus disabling user accounts without explanation or remedy. Hopefully they will take their eyeballs to another social media site before Zuckerberg has an opportunity to monetize their eyeballs to generate billions.
I am heading over to friendfinder. On my way there, I'm going to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in San Jose, CA, and with the CA Attorney General as well as join the campaign against Facebook in a rally of support for friendfinder.
Come on, friends. Let's let Facebook know we've had enough of their egregious, monopolistic and unresponsive business practices and head over to friendfinder. Let's leave Zuckerberg and crew sitting in Palo Alto with a room full of servers and no subscribers. It's probably only a matter of time before they wrongly disable all user accounts as their security algorithms run a muck and no one responds to user email to bring about a resolution. I'm all for security, but c'mon, Facebook. How much of a security threat is a middle-aged woman with a handful a friends and a series of vacation pictures who logs onto Facebook at most 3 times a week to check in with friends and family?! You don't need an algorithm or security team to tell you that the probability of me posing a threat to Facebook or its users is nil.
There are many business cases of Goliath companies who became complacent even offensive to customers which created a gap to be filled by a company who gets it. UPS created a gap for FedEx to enter and grab a huge share of market. Microsoft created a gap with its resource-intensive, buggy, blue-screen-laden software graciously de-bugged by its customers. Enter Apple's super successful 'Switch' campaign portraying Apple as a place where....everything 'just works.' Those are two that immediately come to mind. Perhaps friendfinder is just the underdog to step in and fill the gap created by Facebook's erroneous account disablement and unresponsiveness to bring about a remedy.

I just found a site regarding Facebook that suggested reporting this type thing to the Federal Trade Commission. There are thousands of Facebook users whose accounts are being unfairly blocked and/or disabled. Facebook boasts of how many users they have - they say they have 0ver 200 million worldwide, but I'm finding out there are thousands who are abused by this company. Facebook needs to reveal that figure to the public also. I did indeed file a complaint on-line with the FTC - it's very easy and they take you seriously. You are given a case number and also a phone number to call of check on your complaint if needed. When filing a complaint with them, make sure to have on hand the address and phone number (of which you cannot speak with a LIVE person) handy, as you will need it to file.......

My account was also disabled, for what reason I don't know. I barely use it. Maybe lack of use. Or I was hacked and didn't know it. Or just because they felt like it. Like most of you, I have sent numerous e-mails and received nothing back. Guess I'm done with FaceBook, I'm certainly not opening another account, or worse, waiting patiently for them to maybe open it again and wonder when it will be shut down again.
You think, especially in this economy, when there are so many other services out there and they're so desperate for users and revenue, that they wouldn't risk doing such things so easily, and without warning at that.

FB needs big help in the Customer Relations area. I only play Mafia Wars on it, and the game ENCOURAGES making friends and adding them to your Family. I did so, spammed nobody, only contacted friends of fellow Family Members, and NEVER recontacted anyone who did not respond.
I get a generic "your account has been disabled....read the TOS". No reason, nothing. Then they do not respond to 4 very polite e-mails acknowledging that I should slow down on adding friends (on a "supposed social networking site"). I actually made a lot of friends playing the game. All I get are generic CG form letters that mean nothing.
People say "just start over". No thanks....FaceBook can kiss my ass as being unresponsive and hypocritical and I am leading everyone I know to alternative sites that actually care.

Hi I have only been on Facebook a short time at least in their dealing with me they made derogatory comments about my activities on Facebook spamming etc, but I wasn't spamming. Since they do not actually spell out in detail as far as I can see what are their terms of use, how could anyone know what their terms of use are. As far as I know, their terms of use could be that people who wear blue underwear are only allowed make ten posts a year and any more than that, results in an immediate ban but people who are married to attractive table lamps are allowed one thousand posts an hour. Frankly the way the way Facebook go about their activities is Fascist and Facebook induce the sort of brand loyalty that Hitler did for the German tourism industry amongst British visitors when he was bombing London. I've also been suspended from Facebook (about 2-3 months ago) and can't seem to get back on. I keep getting automated replies that don't make sense. I'm pretty annoyed about it because I have alot of friends on FB who need to be informed about the 3rd annual Animal Action Day at Threeworlds, Gold Coast, on October 3, 2009. Once a person has been disabled for violating Terms of Service is there anyway to re-qualify for service after a certain length of time away or paying a minimal fine? I think the "life sentence" for such permanently disabled accounts is unreasonable and unfair.

Facebook disabled my 450k fan tattoo page which i had from the very beginning. I put so much effort into this fanpage and many people loved it.

I have been disabled too. I have make some speak about web 2.0 and recomend many people joint to facebook. I have even appear in some magazines talking about facebook and social networks. I think the email from disabled@facebook.com are not read by humans and the responses are automated as well. There are lots of variations of the same kinds of responses, but I think they create templates and try to make it seem as if humans are responding. However, there are lots of clues that humans are not involved in the process. It seems that facebook monitors everything about your interaction whenever you visit the site. If they don't like what the detect, they disable the account, usually don't warn the user, take their time responding (days), and arbitrarily seem to either activate the account again or disable it. Sometimes you get no response at all, but others say they received responses like this is the final decision, your account will never be activated again. Here are two emails I received from Facebook due to two incidents that led to automatic disabling of my account for no good reason at all. I think it had something to do with a firefox upgrade, quite possibly a browser add-on as the second email indicates.

My account was also disabled. They told me I violated their agreement, but I'm just a 52 year old grandma that is only interested in communicating with my family and friends. Everything that I've done is related to that. I can't even imagine what I could have done that would be so bad. Joe Shapiro, is a scam artist who stole hundreds of hours of code from me as well as other people.
He then ripped me off in other ways, and I never got paid ad ime. He stole my ideas and incorporated them into ushow.com
And then he got my facebook account disabled along with all my facebook apps.
I don't understand how facebook listens to trash scam artists with no originality and does whatever they like.
I'm about to sue Joe. Too bad ushow.com is a cross between youtube, twitter and facebook along with my ideas.

i have no idea why i was suspended. I got a warning for requesting, what you deem as too many, friendships. Thats what I dont understand. I join groups and have expanded my network of people who have common interest or are interesting. Why would you discourage that in a global society that wants to be connected? Facebook was born out of some desire of a few in comparison to the size now. Well, many people reach out to others and LOVE facebook and LOVE getting new friends. I thought that was what it was all about. Giving people what they want and holding NO boundaries. Control is why people grew tired of big companies. I understand nudity. I understand spam, threats etc. But simply reaching out to someone should NOT be controlled. What is wrong if i want to make contact with EVERYONE in the world? Is it taking too much server space of your or bandwidth if people do that? The world is flat now and wants to be connected and you guys gave the impression that you were for the people. I have met people from all over the world and I LOVE it. What is so different from me physically walking up to a person and starting a conversation. If they dont wanna talk to me they can ignore me. if they do then GREAT. THAT is how Facebook SHOULD be. Groups of people or just individuals should be free to roam all over the world of FAcebook making friendships if they choose. Some people dont. They stick to their close circle of friends and thats it. This is a land of the FREE isnt it? YOu guys are operating like a virtual COmmunist country governing how many friends you can have and how many people you can meet at one time. You says it is annoying to get a request but WHO says that? And how many people complain?? Thats life isnt it? ANYONE has the right to walk up to you and say hi and try to get to know you. You can either do so or ignore them. And Facebook has that option to IGNORE doesnt it? I have yet to hear from anyone I know that gets a lot of requests and it is annoying to them. Perhaps that what you guys think or feel because you are anal and not outgoing and sociable? I dont know. But you are behaving like a virtual COmmunist government and not like a Democracy. You have a world of subscribers who have lives on FAcebook and love ones there and friend, workmates, lovers and acquaintances. Now that I had hundreds maybe thousands of people fluttering to help get my account back, they give me a message saying that they require a copy of my Texas Identification / Drivers License before they will even talk to me, they state that this will prove ownership of the account.
I have thousands of friends on Face Book & the game "Vampire Wars", people have started a group to get my account re-instated also a petition to help back it up, but Face Book will not even recognize either.
If they had given me a legitimate reason for my account being disabled I would have been happy to correct any issue that caused the disabling of my account.
I find all this strange as I have always been a supporter of Face Book and the T.O.S they have, heck man, I am a Christian Minister and have the respect of many people on Face Book as a helping hand and someone that has spent countless hours talking to people that were having issues with FB & the game we all play, it appears that this do-sent matter to them at all.

Think of it as OpenSocial - except no one owns it and it's more than just widgets.
We have all scraped for years on various platforms, so FB is not "new" in getting heavy, they obviously want to keep us all in.
Trouble is walled gradens typically get emulated at some point in an open environment, it's inevitable, I'm sure they must realise that.
Heck, even Gmail has an open API for getting contacts from it (though it's not working on Twitter at the moment :( ).

I would personally recommend loops with a minimum delay of 45 seconds, loosely ranging up to 5 min then a few longer delays along the lines of 1, 2, 8 and 12 hours.The longer delays should be fairly infrequent, but would give a better approximation of an active user, vs. a script.
Yes it will take longer to run than a quick script that scrapes 100 pages or so, but it still should run through 4999 relationships in about a week
In its benign form, this works because the service that the users get has more value than the information they give. However, the malignant form of this - and Facebook is not the only culprit - then attempts to lock users in to the service by making it impossible to take the information elsewhere.
The point is that services such as Facebook have to recognise that they don't own the information which makes their service valuable.
Facebook sucks anyway.

I was banned in December and *still* am not sure for what. No scripts, nothing unusual...other than being participatory in the system that they created (I used their email, invited people, wrote on walls, etc.) They didnt even give my photos, videos, or contact information back - some of my business contacts were made and maintained on facebook so I have no way to recover them. I complained and they simply replied that the ban was permanent.
I was one of their biggest fans...now I've joined the growing chorus of detractors. Their own hubris will be what brings them down.
I could remember Mr.Eric Schmidt was saying ... "let users move their data around, never trap the data of an end user, let them move it if they don't like us"

As a new reader/viewer/fan, I think you need to broadcast yourself live, via your cell phone at Qik, 24/7 through this whole thing. We'll send pizzas or whatever you need since your phone will be tied up. It'll be fun. Of course you can order pizza via the web. Papa John's is good at this. And do some fun tours, perhaps of the Harvard dorm where Zuckerberg got things started. And walk up to people in public and ask them to be your friend. Tell them you just lost 4,999. :-)

Given that, the company has to show it has some ideas about how to take targetted advertising forward at large scale; that is with a credible path to annual revenues of $5-10B in the next two to three years (with continued rapid growth after that). And while they're executing on their plan, they have to avoid becoming irrelevant.
From the position the company is in now, all this could be a pretty big challenge. Alienating users really isn't the way to build confidence that they know what they're doing...
There's one last remnant of you on Facebook. A while back, as a joke, I started a "Friends of Scoble Overflow" group for people who could not Friend you because of the 5K limit. If it can be of any use to you in your hour of banishment, I place it at your disposal.

As in "you've been scobled dude": terminated, waxed, disabled, vaporized, eliminated, banned abruptly and without warning.
I find this to be a bit annoying because I am one of the many users who rarely, if ever, adds someone that I don't know in person. Having people maintain their own contact information for sync'ing with Outlook and subsequently my cell phone is a killer feature. Unfortunately we aren't allowed to do that.
In a recent Slashdot story, I voiced contempt for Facebook's meaningless notification messages and suggested finding workarounds using open-source tools to add the missing functionality. The comment was moderated to the top. Either Facebook's employees have been reading Slashdot or other users have complained about this issue because (coincidentally) the text of both wall messages and private messages is now emailed out. Maybe Outlook sync'ing will be the next hurdle they conquer after reading this?
Especially not a friend, who we trust to not do that.
So while I agree with some fundamental arguments people are making here, we can't rail against Beacon with one side of the mouth and then support someone using a script to lift my social graph for outside use without me knowing.
I guess what I'm asking is: do we really want a walled garden or not?
How about this? Can I write down your email address and put it in my address book?
Or, how about your birthday?
So, why am I allowed to write down your phone number or email address, but my computer can't take it out of Facebook and put it into Outlook for me? Or another program or service I'm using?
How about something that actually ads value, like something that'd see that you're on both Facebook and Twitter and Flickr and could mash those three together?
You would think that more then a decade after the Internet defeated the walled gardens of AOL, Compuserve e.a. people should know better.
The TOS covers some areas where we wouldn't want an application to scrape the contents, including others' message, contact info, and so on. That's what creates a thing called 'spam'.
Either you're accessing your own information, which we assume you have already. Or you're accessing information about other people, and they have a right to know this information is being ported outside of this application. Did you ask all your 5000+ friends if your interaction with them, and their info can be pulled from Facebook and placed into some other app?
As for 5000+ friends -- you must have a been a lonely kid, that you have to have so many 'friends'.
I have been annoyed by Facebook many times, and could care less what happens with it (I will just move to another, better social network). But when you have already established friends, and groups, that's such a pain in the ass that I'd rather they changed their TOS.
It depends on what you mean by public, if I share that data with my friends only on Facebook they absolutely should not have the right to republish it, use it for their personal use, sure.
Its a privacy thing, it'd be like me giving you my phone number and you publishing it in a directory without my permission, not okay.
It all depends on what you're scraping the data for, and what you're using it for. Transportation to another system, sure, public use, nope.
You can take it with you, but you can't publish it, give it to a third party on another system? Arguably no(by that I mean make my phone number visible to everyone else on another system, not use a program that stores data you have collected similar to a gmail contact list or the sort).
I gave you and Facebook my information, I didn't you, however, permission to republish my data, only to use it personally.

You have that many friends because you don't mistreat them? Robert, you probably don't even know more than a few hundred people's names. You're using Facebook like an aggregator, not a true social network.
You're now listing things presumably you were using the script to gather, but my point is that I don't know how innocent the information is that you want. You ask about my name-- I have some friends who are artists who use pseudonyms and they are not searchable in Facebook, so yes- they actually do covet their names. Birthdays? Certainly you know the issues with credit card fraud and complete birthdays.
I'm sure you have a very reasonable and innocent, possibly even practical and helpful, reason for wanting whatever info you want. But some people rely on their privacy and don't want their data ported. I'm not one of them, at least not about all my info, but it seems to me we need to be careful about the straw man of, "but I could just do this..." - That's the same argument employers used when they'd hire student interns of a particular college to scope out potential employees when Facebook was college only. You certainly could just write down things on paper and build your own. That doesn't mean your friends would have given you good-faith permission to do so.

If I break an NDA I'll ruin relationships, etc and possibly end up in court. Both of which cost me time/money/opportunity.
You still have those hundreds of hours there, they are just in limbo as you are "disabled" - sort of like having a fan page unpublished. They can flick the switch and you'd be back on.
And some would argue that breaking social contracts has consequences too- just not always legal ones. This whole discussion may be as much a wake up call to only friend closer-to-the-vest "friends" and for people to stop friending relative internet personalities who accept everyone. Maybe this is a MySpace moment when it dawns on some that every one of their 1,000 close personal friends are neither and that because of unknown intention, a pruning begins.

Taking one of your comments a step farther, would it violate their terms of service for you to outsource the same functionality you were trying to automate to a service provider in India or somewhere similar to do it manually? It would be an interesting face-off (pun intended) as they try to lock down your info and you manually - and I hope LOUDLY - work your way around it.
If they let you do it manually and they let a weak version exist - the CSV app - they not letting a power user implement a power tool is just silly.

I would argue that it's not Facebook's job to know friend from foe in this instance. That responsibility belongs to Facebook's users. Don't friend Viagra spammers and you won't have a problem.

As is evident by the fervor of comments here and the deluge of twitters and I am sure emails you are receiving, the idea of data and identity portability is a charged issue.
I agree with a lot of others here that as these various social networks evolve and mature, users seek to unify their identities online and try to make cohesive their various social communities. Getting access to the data that makes up your FB social graph is a step in that direction and even though I am sure you are whirling in all of this buzz now, your experiences here and endorsement of open sourcing efforts could go a long way to hopefully allowing social networking and how we all experience them to evolve.
I offer up my support and any other resources if you have need for them in all of this.

So it was with relief when the whole Beacon issue came to light that I 'suspended' my profile knowing that at least FB didn't have any information outside of the minimum... they can't keep what they don't have.
But who cares about nameless, faceless little ol' me?
Now, the world notices if FB pulls stuff against you, Robert - and that's all to the good.
Because their TOS and attitudes toward our data is reprehensible... You don't get to make money off of my information and then refuse to let me have access to my information.
It will be nice to see when FB either finally gives up on their "mineminemine" attitude or goes the way of so many other irresponsible sites.

Facebook clearly does not think our data belongs to us. I have also been locked out of being able to log in to my MySpace account for over six months and have not been able to delete it either, with no response from MySpace "customer service," so it's just hanging there for eternity, a frozen MySpace account. I once wrote about how Facebook was so much better than MySpace, but I won't any more, until Facebook changes its ownership policies. Robert, I hope your experience, and your friends' lobbying for you via other social networks, blogs, Seesmic, etc., will open up a new discussion on this issue with Faceook—but will they listen and change anything? That question remains to be answered.

I don't understand the philosophical (or political) talks about 'who owns the data'. You sign a contract and you should forget that. Who owns the data is another thing.
Right, because poor little Facebook, with its $15 billion valuation, and 15 billion pageviews per month, stands a fair chance of being bankrupted by Robert Scoble viewing five thousand pages in too short a period of time. They're so going to need another OC-192.
Other people connect with you on the basis of that agreement, you violated their trust.
You don't own the data, it is a shared resource between your contacts (I wont call them friends), you and Facebook.

You say you don't break NDAs because they are legal contracts and could get you into legal hot water and hurt business relationships. But the Facebook TOS -- which you agreed to when you signed up for the account -- is also very much a legal agreement. You broke it, they saw you broke it and disabled your account.
It's that simple. To complain about it after-the-fact shows either that you don't care about other people's legal agreements with you, or that you care, but will break the rules when it suits your purposes anyway.
In either case, you look like an idiot and I'm sure these kinds of continuing actions (willful disregard for legal agreements) will make people rethink their ongoing business relationships with you.
There are various FB opt-in applications out there so until teh API opens up more this is the only way ... sigh.

but I will say this... I tried to poke you and add you as a friend and I didn't get a response from you when I was going through the same issue you are now. KARMA my man. Don't get upset... I obviously felt rebuked by you because I wanted to talk. I had heard a lot about you... and felt like I didn't make it into your social networking country club. Oh yes Robert... they say your on the A-List.
Scoble has 5000 facebook friends and he hammered on their server with a script to retrieve said friends' info - of course he got auto-banned, if they didn't automatically kick anyone doing that, their servers would collapse under spam address harvesters in well under a week.
He can do the same job slowly, whether automatically or by hand, and they'd neither know nor care.
They reinstated him as soon as he promised not to do it again, mostly because he has a reasonably significant audience.
Of course, having come to the attention of "admins", *then* issues of data ownership, terms of service and personal beliefs or urges come into any ensuing dispute. TOS are, like all one-sided contracts everywhere, crafted to let the contract-writer off the hook while retaining for the contract-writer maximum flexibility to exploit the content providers, i.e. the punters.
Promises of confidentiality or protection of "personal data" are as empty and meaningless, as anyone with half a brain should be able to discern, as the punter's "agreement" to, e.g. provide their correct date of birth. Anyone who gives a correct date of birth to Facebook is an idiot, in my opinion. Once your info is on facebook, rest assured that it's freely available to anyone who really wants it, friend or foe. I'd be very surprised if facebook didn't archive all changes you've made to your profile, ever, and hang on to 'em in case they turn out to be in some way saleable.
As to the fickleness of admins, again this seems pretty much to be expected.
As with other inflated-value data harvesting operations on the 'net, *online*, Facebook appears to be administered day-to-day by kids, who do what kids always do when put in charge of something - they turn into pissy little megalomaniacs. This has happened with a lot of fast-growing online forums or services.
They start off ill-equipped for big business, they compound the problem by having to hire quickly and indiscriminately to cope with exponential growth, the numbers rapidly rocket through "scary" to "unimaginable" and folk in suits (hoping to turn a fast buck on the stock) will follow the founders practically to the door of the bankruptcy courts telling them how untouchably rich and great they are.
Smart and lucky ones cash in and get out while the going is good and the stock good and inflated. Some probably start up explicitly to attempt this, but what seems to sell well is a sort of more or less genuine initial naivety and idealism, so this has become a predictable pattern for internet success stories.
(Punters don't like to feel sold-to or exploited, but the most hardened idealists start to re-assess their ideals in light of millions of dollars.)
Google *appear* to be attempting to be different (not necessarily better or less sinister), but I think there's a recognition in the (financial) industry that google's value is inherently longer-lived than fashion-led success stories like facebook. Facebook can go to the wall anytime and major investors will still be happy, since they don't expect it to last anyway.
Naturally, this is just my opinion...
I have understood significance of free data export in social project. I'm running one startup - gettingtasksdone.com And it's was not so hard to implement export of users data. The main problem was in my mind.

I was kicked off of a site, ERE.net - No, I didn't break their TSA agreement, and the owner, the guy who kicked me off, well based upon what he told me, he doesn't Remember exactly what I did wrong either.
So, 8 Years of My information, 8 Years of Comments, Members of Groups and networks, My personal Groups that I created, and acknowledged in ERE's media Kit as being some of the more popular, as well as articles I wrote, are stuck on this site, and I DON'T EVEN HAVE ANY ACCESS TO THIS INFORMATION.
Here is an even more interesting story. Used to be that one could type in my last name (uncommon name) and the word ERE as a search string, and it would bring 60k+ hits; well in LESS than 2 weeks, it now brings up 1700 hits in google. It appears that they are Blocking Me Access to MY information via Google as well. 60k - 1700 in LESS than 2 weeks, that is a bit more than coincidence.
Okay, so let's bypass censorship, let's even bypass TSA agreements, which many won't hold up in a court of law for being totally vague, and incomplete.. (which I Did NOT break)
Let's look at OWNERSHIP of material, and loss of said materials. What should be considered Non Exclusive Rights - which means that the Author has some rights and the publisher also has some rights
So what are those rights? No, a company doesn't have the Automatic Right to Edit or remove another's PUBLISHED information w/o allowing them full access to that said published information.
Now let's also go back to TSA agreements. Many of these companies think that they can Unilatteraly Change their terms of Service in the Agreements w/o EVER Publicly telling their users, and not gaining their Consent. That is NOT the Case. All Parties MUST be aware at the time of Change if they want to continue or agree with the Terms of Service, and the information must be made Publicly for an extended period of time..
There are so many other issues that appear with these social networks, and It is time that we as the public really become aware of OUR rights in this process. What Do WE own, what RIGHTS do we have, and for sure, how do we go about maintaining those rights

Sometimes I post things in Facebook that are literally only for my friends, if my potential future employers / family (i.e. grandmother) / others saw them well - it might not be the best career move. Whilst I am sure what you were doing did not have a "sinister" motive, you now can no longer publish email addresses (or even mobile telephone numbers) on websites without it being spammed.
I feel Facebook are in the right, just tell them what you were trying to do! They are allowing an export application... so its not like they are being "evil".

Than all my emails to Digg support were ignored completelly. Traffic dropped 90% in the next days. For about 2 months I posted messages asking someone, anyone, to review this thing...
In three months I was alone on the blog.
I had to change domain and Digg account and start all over again after 1 and a half years of blogging.

Essentially, it’s just like any other type of union. If one of us gets banned unfairly, we all stop using the site. They have to listen to the masses…
Many of us here are highly influential individuals, and we should all agree on the following:
1) Convicted individuals need a way to plead for their innocence and individuals who are not in violation of any rules should have restored accounts.
2) All rules should be stated clearly on the site, and non-damaging first-time violations of rules that are not made clear should be dealt with through a warning.

My guess is that these kinds of web sites are either too stupid or too cheap to employ someone to mediate these kinds of disputes. They make more money that way by saving costs, right? At least in the short run...
Disputes are human... normal... to be expected.
But ignoring users with a problem is an ignorant way of handling this kind of issue.

There is a big difference between applications/services that scrape your information for their use and a application that allows a user to take their data and use it somewhere else.
The bottom line is that all this information belongs to Scoble. The connections, content, page views, etc - were all created by Scoble. Facebook just provides an interface and storage solution for the users data - and they get paid for that via advertising. None of this content, and therefore facebook, would not exist if the users don't create it. A user should be allowed to do with that data what he pleases.

My account got disabled 4 days ago. I sent them 4 email and no response as yet. Christmas is on the corner and I'm cutt off from my friends. I read the Terms of Use...and I have absolutely no idea what did I do wrong.
Ya, I do get one pop up from facebook, saying that they have lost my email setting and that I should enter email address and setting stuff again. I did that...and then I got the pop up agian next day. Did again....and after few days my account is disabled....
I feel so miserable and cut off from my friends. don't know what to do.
On top of it my ancestry records and family photographs going back to early 1800s and research going back to 1200s, 1690s and early 1700s.

I came across your name on a site Techsideup relating to a story “Facebook Founder Gets Adult Supervision”, that Marc Andreesen had become your personal mentor.
I then looked at some of the seemingly randomly disabled Facebook accounts by Facebook admin staff (including mine – see above) on Scobleizer.com
It seems to me that young inexperienced Facebook staff are playing judge, jury and executioner in making these seemingly random decisions.
I am extremely analytical and perceptive. This is no way to run a business.
Facebook staff need a broader view on life. Facebook is coming across as religious right wing extremist, which is not an “average” view of the world which you should be! Because that is the debate I was portraying and it seems some the other good folk that have been disabled.
I look forward to a positive response from Facebook Admins with regard to my Facebook account being reactivated (see reasons above).
I believe while it is an organisation that has grown quickly, they have not got their "back office" operations under control.
Some younger staff do not understand/comprehend some of the debate or the valuable role we play using Facebook as a medium to communicate eg. whales/Zimbabwe/nuclear/religious debate.
I wish Facebook well and am pleased to be back and operating.

Like many others who have complained about a situation like mine, im helpless and frustrated.
I’ve tried everything, but nothing seems to work.ive sent about 10 Emails to all the Facebook Emails and never got a respond.
I don’t know if its worth it, me waiting to get some help from them.it makes me upset when I go to check if they enabled it and its still not working (I do it every day)
I really need this account back, with the same content that I had before they decided to come up on me.
I really hate feeling so helpless and that I cant do anything about it but sending the Facebook Costumer Services Emails and asking for help. I mean COME ON! I am not the only one who has this problem! It’s a 1 in a 1000000 chance that they would help ME (I was never lucky to get that much of attention).

I was on there bad list because they kept disabling me. I guess if you are a rebel then you are banned. They should tell you when you hit the limit and how many stories are considered illegal.

I'm just a normal person, with roughly 30 friends who uses Facebook to share vacation photos and stay in touch with friends and family. Hardly sounds like malicious activity and grounds for having my account disabled, does it?
'Jada' has asked me to choose a new security question--twice. Yet my account goes on disabled. This reeks of a phishing scam despite the communications coming from @Facebook.com. Inquiries to other Facebook aliases have gone unanswered.
A quick Google search quickly reveals that I am but one of many thousands of people who have had their Facebook account disabled without warning, explanation or remedy. Add to that Facebook's unresponsiveness to my inquires to effect a resolution and they have become a poster child for egregious business practices. It's a typical technology David and Goliath tale where the market leader holds customers hostage with no ability to bring about a successful resolution to the errors produced by Facebook's erroneous algorithms that determine which accounts are flagged for disablement.
Let Zuckerberg and Facebook continue to turn a blind ear to it's customers. Hopefully, disgruntled Facebook customers will rally together and jump ship to friendfinder or some other social networking application that actually encourages social networking versus disabling user accounts without explanation or remedy. Hopefully they will take their eyeballs to another social media site before Zuckerberg has an opportunity to monetize their eyeballs to generate billions.
I am heading over to friendfinder. On my way there, I'm going to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in San Jose, CA, and with the CA Attorney General as well as join the campaign against Facebook in a rally of support for friendfinder.
Come on, friends. Let's let Facebook know we've had enough of their egregious, monopolistic and unresponsive business practices and head over to friendfinder. Let's leave Zuckerberg and crew sitting in Palo Alto with a room full of servers and no subscribers. It's probably only a matter of time before they wrongly disable all user accounts as their security algorithms run a muck and no one responds to user email to bring about a resolution. I'm all for security, but c'mon, Facebook. How much of a security threat is a middle-aged woman with a handful a friends and a series of vacation pictures who logs onto Facebook at most 3 times a week to check in with friends and family?! You don't need an algorithm or security team to tell you that the probability of me posing a threat to Facebook or its users is nil.
There are many business cases of Goliath companies who became complacent even offensive to customers which created a gap to be filled by a company who gets it. UPS created a gap for FedEx to enter and grab a huge share of market. Microsoft created a gap with its resource-intensive, buggy, blue-screen-laden software graciously de-bugged by its customers. Enter Apple's super successful 'Switch' campaign portraying Apple as a place where....everything 'just works.' Those are two that immediately come to mind. Perhaps friendfinder is just the underdog to step in and fill the gap created by Facebook's erroneous account disablement and unresponsiveness to bring about a remedy.

Then they do not respond to 4 very polite e-mails acknowledging that I should slow down on adding friends (on a "supposed social networking site"). I actually made a lot of friends playing the game. All I get are generic CG form letters that mean nothing.

I am very surprised about disabling my facebook account. I only added my real friends and i sent messages to my real friends. I have never abused anyone or behaved anyone badly. Facebook warned me about sending friend requests but they are my real friends and 18.08.2009 my account has been disabled. I wrote e-mails to facebook but they havent returned me yet. 5 days happened from deactivation. I want to log in again in the same e mail adress. Plz help me, i want to return facebook. If they dont reactivate my account again i wont sign up again because i have never done bad action, i dont deserve this deactivation. Plz announce my complain to facebook authorized

He then ripped me off in other ways, and I never got paid ad ime. He stole my ideas and incorporated them into ushow.com
And then he got my facebook account disabled along with all my facebook apps.
I don't understand how facebook listens to trash scam artists with no originality and does whatever they like.

i have no idea why i was suspended. I got a warning for requesting, what you deem as too many, friendships. Thats what I dont understand. I join groups and have expanded my network of people who have common interest or are interesting. Why would you discourage that in a global society that wants to be connected? Facebook was born out of some desire of a few in comparison to the size now. Well, many people reach out to others and LOVE facebook and LOVE getting new friends. I thought that was what it was all about. Giving people what they want and holding NO boundaries. Control is why people grew tired of big companies. I understand nudity. I understand spam, threats etc. But simply reaching out to someone should NOT be controlled. What is wrong if i want to make contact with EVERYONE in the world? Is it taking too much server space of your or bandwidth if people do that? The world is flat now and wants to be connected and you guys gave the impression that you were for the people. I have met people from all over the world and I LOVE it. What is so different from me physically walking up to a person and starting a conversation. If they dont wanna talk to me they can ignore me. if they do then GREAT. THAT is how Facebook SHOULD be. Groups of people or just individuals should be free to roam all over the world of FAcebook making friendships if they choose. Some people dont. They stick to their close circle of friends and thats it. This is a land of the FREE isnt it? YOu guys are operating like a virtual COmmunist country governing how many friends you can have and how many people you can meet at one time. You says it is annoying to get a request but WHO says that? And how many people complain?? Thats life isnt it? ANYONE has the right to walk up to you and say hi and try to get to know you. You can either do so or ignore them. And Facebook has that option to IGNORE doesnt it? I have yet to hear from anyone I know that gets a lot of requests and it is annoying to them. Perhaps that what you guys think or feel because you are anal and not outgoing and sociable? I dont know. But you are behaving like a virtual COmmunist government and not like a Democracy. You have a world of subscribers who have lives on FAcebook and love ones there and friend, workmates, lovers and acquaintances. It will only be a matter of time when another social networking site arises and doesnt not behave like communists. and people will follow their will and desires.

At least you received some sort of conversation from Face Book for the disabling of you're account, I was on Face Book for several months and got involved with a game called "Vampire Wars" that FB hosts, I run a group and admin for about 5 others, and all of a sudden my account was disabled with NO explanation.
All that they offered was a link to a FAQ saying that I was probably in violation of T.O.S and NEVER received any sort of formal notice of why my account was disabled.
Now that I had hundreds maybe thousands of people fluttering to help get my account back, they give me a message saying that they require a copy of my Texas Identification / Drivers License before they will even talk to me, they state that this will prove ownership of the account.
I have thousands of friends on Face Book & the game "Vampire Wars", people have started a group to get my account re-instated also a petition to help back it up, but Face Book will not even recognize either.
If they had given me a legitimate reason for my account being disabled I would have been happy to correct any issue that caused the disabling of my account.
I find all this strange as I have always been a supporter of Face Book and the T.O.S they have, heck man, I am a Christian Minister and have the respect of many people on Face Book as a helping hand and someone that has spent countless hours talking to people that were having issues with FB & the game we all play, it appears that this do-sent matter to them at all.
I have remained in contact with many of the Face Book friends (the ones that I can) and they are NOT happy campers.
I am known as "The Forsaken Prince" on Face Book and run the groups "Vampire Friends Network" & "Order of the Forsaken Prince".
