I am very passionate about my blog, but since it is a guitar instructional blog, it is extremely specific. There are a lot of guitar blogs but not that many instructional blogs, or at least not that many that actually keep up with it. Tech and financial blogs are always in demand, but it makes me wonder how personal blogs are able to do well. There doesn't seem to be as much of a demand for these types of things, but maybe its just me.

No, there is no obligation to link anyone. There are far too many blogs out there to do that. Besides, a blog is supposed to be more personal than other media types and with that the right to list only the the blogs you desire to be listed on your site. One of the comments here mentioned how they hate to link to sources of information that will charge the viewer to see the content. The example of IT analyst firms like Gartner and Forrester was given.

I started a blog to aggregate and comment on the analyst reports that are licensed and distributed by IT vendors. These are complete reports from those same leading IT analysts, but you don't have to register anywhere or pay a fee to get the report.

Coming late to the party here but....my blog is mostly technical but tends to wander form time to time. Recents posts: Posts on the Newspaper Association of America Marketing COnference in Vegas (They have a blog and a social networking session!), IBM's Social software offerings, disposable underwear, a piece on the guy who blew up the buddhist staures in Afghanistan in 2001 (he was killed last week), MSM coverage vs bloggers at Davos, My ideas for dining VRM, brian finerprinting, ideas for a travel coffee maker and a new Vista boot screen, CES coverage, and is poker a game of skill or chance....

Linking is necessary, not for promotion of bloggers, but instead for revealing your sources. So A-list guys should do it too.

Traditional journalism is viewed by many as untrustworthy. See this link where as much as 75% of journalists are considered untrustworthy: http://www.thinkandask.com/...

Bloggers offer information "straight from the horses mouth" and to make sure the words are correct, the source should be linked. This also promotes people with original thoughts and ideas (as it should be).

Just don't confuse links from your site to links in your link blog. Your link blog is just shared items from Google and therefore has a seperate address and does not carry the weight that a link from your domain does.

Shared Items are a great way to show others what you are reading, but they do not carry the value gained from a "real link" on your blog.

Even though you are always busy I find it awesome that you manage to talk to everybody and view everybody's vlog and the likes.

'Nuff thinking (actually almost 37 hours of it !) - my guitar heroes post is the testimony of the unusually intense and strenuous mental activity.
My thing is to advise clients sensibly on how to deal with Social Media, and the purpose of the blog is to avoid the Unmarried Marriage Consultant syndrome.

I'm not sure my blog is interesting to anyone but me. I tend to link little because all so often an article has said it all.

People don't come to me for links to other places, they come by happy accident mostly, so lots of this-is-cool links probably wouldn't be appreciated by anyone.

Just keep doing what you are doing Robert. I get sick of all the people who try to get you to link to them by mentioning your name in a post. How on earth are you expected to link to all of them? You'd have to employ a full-time team of 100 devotees to keep track of all your links.

Yes, A-list bloggers tend to link to each other and it's a virtuous circle, but that's just the way of the world.
