And as I've experienced myself you don't need to. The secret is to get the fat burning rate up. But you won't get this done without hopping into your sneakers and start running or cycling or whatever gets your cardio up and running. Cheers, Jan

Re: Did Calacanis just call me fat?

I am the biggest blogger bar none!!.

www.callmefat.blogspot.com

Re: Did Calacanis just call me fat?

Robert,

If you want to lose weight, you need to make small but persistant changes in what you eat. People who make big changes or "go on a diet" tend to gain any weight back that they lose.

I suggest South Beach, which has some good peer-reviewed studies behind it about the benefit both to weight and health. Shangri-la is too weird to me, and AFAIK doesn't have any clinical research behind it. You can eat small amounts of chocolate on South Beach, though you have to watch the sugar.

Exercise does help, though it's more for health than for weight loss. There are lots of fat fit people.

Eric
6'2", 162 pounds
That puts me at around 10% body fat.

Re: Did Calacanis just call me fat?

Ooh, that reminds me I still have to write my "On the Road to Being a Healthy Geek" post.

Re: Did Calacanis just call me fat?

Dude...

No white stuff, and in the gym 6-7 days a week, hence 248 to 185...perhaps too thin?

Re: Did Calacanis just call me fat?

Hmm. One class can knock of 900 calories and a lot of sweat. A lot of places offer a 2 week or 4 week trial to see if you like it.

And since you love the gadgets I have to recommend also getting the Nike+iPod Sport kit addon for your iPod. The Nike site tells you how many calories you burned - walking or running 3 miles gets you 600 calories down and can only take 30-40 minutes.

Also, the first thing you can do is drop any sodas you are currently drinking. Drinking ice water is supposed to use 70 calories per glass plus saves you the 120 calories you would have gained from the soda. Multiply that by the number of sodas you normally drink and you are well into savings on that 2000 or 2500 calorie diet.

Re: Did Calacanis just call me fat?

Shangri-la. Kathy Sierra turned me onto this last May in a blog post. Go to www.sethroberts.net. I eat what I want and do not excercise. Went from 230 lbs to 197 lbs with no effort. I'm working on the last 20 lbs now...

I just take 3 tablespoons of flavorless olive oil every morning and don't eat anything 1 hour before and 1 hour after. Appetite is suppressed and "set point" is lowering with the weight. It's the perfect "diet" for the person who is perched behind a computer most of the day...

Seth is local to you (a Berkeley prof). You should do a show on him. He is amazing!

Re: Did Calacanis just call me fat?

One small thing that helps: LOTS of icewater. Four quick reasons: (1) If you normally drink soda (even diet), the icewater helps get you UNaccustomed to so much sweetness throughout the day. (2) Ample hydration abets any fitness program. (3) More water tends to suppress appetite somewhat. (4) Icewater actually costs you a few calories to drink as your body invests energy in bringing c. 35-degree water up to your body temperature. It's a small thing, but one that you can do all day, every day.

Re: Did Calacanis just call me fat?

Don't drop the chocolate, drop drop the duck with sauce. I did it by cutting calories and using a moving average of my daily weigh-ins to monitor my progress (The Hacker's Diet).

You do not have to exercise to lose weight. In fact exercise is a very inefficient way to lose weight. But exercise is the only way to become fit. It is also a great way to manage stress.

You can see my diet progress here: http://www.physicsdiet.com/...

You can watch the progress of 140 or so public users here:
http://www.physicsdiet.com/...

Right now the Top 10 Biggest Losers (by weight lost) have all lost more than 60 pounds. The top 4 have all lost more than 100 pounds. That list is a great source of inspiration.

Good luck Robert! You can absolutely reach your goal. And you can do it without giving up Swiss chocolate. You just can't eat too much Swiss chocolate.

Disclaimer: I created the PhysicsDiet.com site and I do make some money from advertising on the site.

Re: Did Calacanis just call me fat?

How about getting those gaming machines hooked up online?

http://scobleizer.com/2006/...

"Yeah, yeah, I gotta get meself into the gym. I dropped from 230 down to ~207...would love to drop another 20, but that's being a pain.

My method of choice for going on 17 years now has been a fun take on Korean Martial Arts, Kuk Sool Won. There's a school in your area, KSW of Half Moon Bay. The web site is at: http://www.hmbksw.com/wp/

Warning: Martial Arts web sites tend to be TOTALLY hokey. Lots of enthusiasm and sincerity, not so much on the design sensibility. They also don't tend to really care about tech, so you may have some culture shock if you go.

However...

standard martial arts warning

Regardless of style, go and watch a class, maybe even two. Get a feel for the instructor(s) and the other students. If you aren't feeling it, don't sign up and hope it'll get better. This kind of thing is really reliant on the personalities of the instructor and student. If they don't mesh, you're going to not be having fun.

If they try to get you to sign a contract and that seems to be the only way to take classes, walk. The average percentage of people going from start to first degree black belt is 1%. That's not something you want to bet on.

Oh, don't try to judge the fitness aspect of things by how...overtly hard it looks. This is, in a lot of ways, like Yoga. It doesn't look hard, but trust me, you do a hundred kicks or so across the course of an hour or two a few times a week for a few years, and you'll notice it ;-)

The Half Moon Bay school looks like a fun one for families. There's another one at 2450 Sutter St. in S.F., that's run by one of the grandmaster's kids, (or maybe his brother, I forget). No web site, so I'm not sure about how the school is.

Anyway, think about it. Stuff you can do as a family or with other people tends to be easier than trying to go it solo.

John C.
