Scobleizer: Correcting the Record about Microsoft

  • polizeros · 3 years ago
Go for it. Do hope you'll still be blogging!
  • Mark Marchall · 3 years ago
Maybe they offered heaven and hell for you, but they obviously didn't offer enough. And that says a lot about Microsoft. It says they really don't care about the blogosphere. It says they really don't care about the influentials. It says they really won't be able to turn the bad PR around. To bad, cause they make some great products.
  • Diego · 3 years ago
This takes me by surprise! Anyway, best wishes for you!
  • Kyle Shank · 3 years ago
Sounds like PodTech.net will be a perfect fit. Looking forward to it :)
  • Harrison Hoffman · 3 years ago
Robert, I am definitely sad to see you leave Microsoft. You were a huge asset to the company and helped to change the way that Microsoft communicates with its customers. I am sure you will be doing great things at PodTech, but you will be missed over here.
  • Alfred Thompson · 3 years ago
I hate to see you leave but I wish you all the best at your new job.
  • Rob Greenlee · 3 years ago
Robert, I know that you have been creating video content on Channel Nine for years and doing a great job blogging, but I have always felt that you should do an audio podcast. I think it is great that you will be blogging and podcasting for John's PodTech.net.

I am sure that doing what you have done over the years at Microsoft has not been easy, but I do believe that they have treated you with respect. You are the kind of person that builds respect. You also exude positive energy and have eternal optimisim.

Good luck to you and look forward to seeing you at Gnomedex in a few weeks.

Robert, congrats on the new gig. But it is a big deal that you're leaving MS. There might be 3000 other MS bloggers but ask people to name three and most will draw a blank. I wish much success at your new endeavor.
  • Hans Bjordahl · 3 years ago
Wow. It's true. Best of luck, Robert!
  • Rick · 3 years ago
As they might say in a VISA commercial:

Cutting your air travel by 90%? Priceless.

I wonder who's going to take up a general-purpose blog for MS now? It's great that they have a million different blogs for every little project, but where's the wide view? A lot of people want to hear one voice on a variety of topics important to the company, just like Google does in their blog. I'm not aware of any other blog like that from MS.
  • Bernie Goldbach · 3 years ago
We'll always have a place you can recharge in Ireland if you and Maryam decide to drop in sometime again. Please consider making podcast pointers to the showcase of Microsoft bloggers in your blogroll.

You make tech accessible. You deflate some of the most acerbic detractors on the planet. Those are big shoes to fill.
  • Daniel Goldman · 3 years ago
Robert, good luck with your new endeavors!
  • Frank Arrigo · 3 years ago
Dude -- best of luck with the next part of your journey
  • Tobin Titus · 3 years ago
I'm very sorry to hear you go. It was a great point of pride that we had the worlds most prolific tech-blogger at our company. The truth is, no matter who was writing your check, your blog has always represented your view of the truth -- even if it meant biting the hand that fed you. You may be moving, but your RSS is still in the same place. Good luck, and I look forward to hearing about your new job.
  • Jim · 3 years ago
Thanks Reobert for clearing that up and good luck with your future.
  • Cody · 3 years ago
See, Scoble, you don't have skills with computers, or at least not to the level that you SHOULD have in a posistion such as yours. I had to correct you in the Vista post, because you didn't understand about MD5 and SHA-1 hashes for comparing data. See, that right there tells me (along with other issues) that you don't know what you're talking about.

I frequently use an OpenBSD server at my house, and along with being virus-proof and spyware/adware proof, I can do EVERYTHING I can with Windows. So, I just don't understand how you can talk about Windows like it's the best thing since sliced bread, when the reality is that it's riddled with so much crap.

And the Vista bloat! Geez, why do I need 15GB of free space! I can install OpenBSD 3.9 with only about 250MB of actual file space. I'm getting sick of all this crap, because you and Microsoft are lying about your products. Microsoft keeps trying to be better (example: UAC in Vista) but even UAC sucks. Have you EVER spent any time using and learning a *nix system? Hell, UNIX systems came out like 30 years ago, and UNIX is STILL dominating Windows even to this day.

I can see right through your BS.
  • Richard Giles · 3 years ago
    Good luck Scoble.

I hope to catch you at Supernova in a couple of weeks, and have a chat about the podcasting landscape. Working with Cam at TPN I'd be interested to get your perspective, as I'm gathering you think it's a major emerging market.

  • Charlie Maitland · 3 years ago
Robert I think that it wil be a great move but I worry for your readership.

Your biggest draw was your ability to get access to the inside word from within MS and report it. I know that there are now 3,000 other people carrying the flag now but they are doing it in a much more formal and official capacity. They also lack the organisation wide view, they blog on their bit of a bit or a product group. This will be a big loss to MS and they need to breed a Scobleizer Mk2 fast.

In your new role you wont have the ability to get to the heart of the issue from inside, you will now just be another press hack who can be passed off to PR dept. Whilst this might take you back I think it will be a culture shock.

Anyway enough of my negative rambling - mostly borne out of loss of a source. Go for it!

Robert, thank you for all the work in getting Microsoft to open up!

    Well done.

    :)
  • Dennis T Cheung · 3 years ago
Best of luck! Now I'll get to see you more often!
  • Christopher Coulter · 3 years ago
    Well, wow...

Not even sticking around for Vista to go Gold? Heh. Team 99 never even made it to the finish line. ;)

Least the virtol will die down, but a podcasting gig? You lost your collective senses? Yet another Menlo Park start-uppy overhyped geeky thing? Short sell quick would be my advice, drink as much in, before it dies...then you can roam from start-up to start-up, doing your eternal dancing-bear and shaky cam blogger routine.

PS - LOST Season 2 be quite intense, you started on that yet?
  • Michael Parekh · 3 years ago
    Classy move, Robert.
I'm referring to your being candid about how you feel about Microsoft.

Congratulations and Best wishes on your other move as well.

You've got a lot of supporters out here.

    All the best,

    michael
  • Gert Van Gool · 3 years ago
I'd say good luck and keep us posted!

Although I think a better motto would be: "Have Fun!"
  • Ross · 3 years ago
All the best for the future Robert, this looks like a good move, and I hope it all works out.

We'll miss your funny laugh on C9 though, so if you could train up Chazz to do the laugh before you go that would be great :)
  • Ian Betteridge · 3 years ago
    Congratulations Robert!
  • Cameron Reilly · 3 years ago
From one professional podcaster to a-soon-to-be-nother, congrats buddy. The professional podcasting industry welcomes you to the fold. If I'd known you were coming I'd have baked a cake. It's about time we had someone who could match Curry in the press stakes! :-)

I'm not surprised you only lastest three years at MSFT though. There was a time when you had to pry people's cold dead hands away from their blue badge.

At least I've got a "first" on you finally. I believe you are the second Micrsoft blogger to quit the mothership to join the podcasting business. :-)
  • irina slutsky · 3 years ago
i'm glad you'll be in the area and i think this move by you shows that many people don't really understand the immense power and future inherent in podcasting/vlogging -- podtech may be "just" a silicon valley startup, but it's time to kick some mainstream media ass as far as i'm concerned.
  • Jerry Mead · 3 years ago
As long as you don't fall into the classic eejit trap of saying "the way WE (i.e. msft) always do it is .... " then I'm sure that your new colleagues will love you.

Good luck, and enjoy the challenge/break/paradigm shift/whatever.
  • Nicole Simon · 3 years ago
Now we know why you bought Maryam a BMW because German cars are ubiquitous in Sillicon Valley. ;o)

Congratulation on your move to new ventures and hopefully shiny new things will happen to you and your wife. :) :)
  • Marc Orchant · 3 years ago
Robert: Congrats of course - it must be quite a relief now that the word is official. It's hard carrying a decision like this around in your pocket. FWIW, I think this is a great move for you and for both companies. Can't wait to see (and hear) the great interviews we all know you'll be doing.
  • Steve Rubel · 3 years ago
Wow - the shot heard round the blogosphere! Congratulations dude!
  • gautamghosh · 3 years ago
i think Microsoft should go out and try and retain you !!
  • gwhiz · 3 years ago
Robert, I'm thrilled for you and hopeful that Microsoft backs the movement up and taps an equally stong blogger/evangelist to step into your shoes. They may *think* that role is already being served in various pockets around the organization... But, anyone who can ferret out the details like you did or have the kinds of access you have... will be far more effective than us keeping up with an incomplete batch of RSS feeds/blogs.

That, more than anything, will tell us how committed they are to the trail you cut for them. We'll see. And, again, congratulations!
  • Brian · 3 years ago
I think we knew this was coming when you started talking about job offers (D'oh!)... You will be missed as a human interface to the Microsoft Unimatrix -- the effort you made to follow up on users' issues was extraordinary and I hope MS replaces you with someone of similar dedication.

My only concern -- HOW will this affect Chris Coulter? ;)
  • Guy Pelletier · 3 years ago
    Wow,
If you had any doubts about the impact you have on the world of blogs, just look at what is going on here.
I will continue to read your blog because you see it as cleanly as humanly possible.
From what I read in this set of comments, there is concern about your blogging and several people happy for you.

Robert, may the force of blog be with you.

    Mazeltov!

Sad news for Microsoft, though... and Microsoft's customers. I feel like the dialog box says "Scobleization of Microsoft Corporation 12% complete..." and you just hit the Cancel button... sigh

Was the phrase "Just tell me it isn't Google" used at any point...? LOL
  • Chris Heuer · 3 years ago
Even though you are going to be busier than ever - read the Don Miguel Ruiz books The Four Agreements and The Mastery of Love sooner rather than later. It will give you some great insights you need now more than ever.

Congratulations - looking forward to talking more later today...
  • Matt Cutts · 3 years ago
Congrats! I hope you enjoy the new place as much as the old one. And I hope you get a little downtime in the midst of the switch; you deserve it. You'll continue the scobleization of your surroundings wherever you are, and that's a Good Thing.
  • AdamB · 3 years ago
At first I didn't get it, but then I checked out the podtech.net web page. Actually for me this link did it: http://www.podtech.net/?p=730. It seems pretty cool to go around and get the news right from regular people without all the hype that news networks put around things.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing more!

Something tell me this is the type of videoblogging we are in store from from Scoble

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-821817...

Scoble won't be missed all that much as far as MS's stock price or sales go. Which is all that ultimately matters to shareholders. I rather doubt he had all the much influence in closing huge Enterprise Agreements or ultimate sales in software. At least recent earnings reports don't seem to indicate that.

Good luck, Scoble. As far as videoblogging being the next big thing? Well, as "Yogi Berra said: "It's deja vu all over again". This has so many similarities to the late 90's hysteria. But, gotta admire the big bet. I don't see this being a Broadcast.com, though.

Speaking of which, here is Mark Cuban's take on the "industry"

    Hey Robert,

You’ve been a great blogger for Microsoft to have and an inspiration for many, it is for that reason that I am very sad to see you leave Microsoft and can only hope that you have as much fun at PodTech that you did in Microsoft, I guess all good things come to an end, you will be missed deeply!

    Don’t stop blogging though. :)

    I think I'm about to re-subscribe to your blog . . .

Admittedly, I used to read you, but started to tune you out then eventually unsubscribed. I think I'm allergic to evangelists. Nothing personal. But I've always supported you (especially in all those hallway conversations) in your enthusiasm, your sincerity, and your right to assert your views whether pro-Microsoft or sometimes contrary and controversial. You changed the company. And for the better, I hope. Time will tell. Let's hope that Ray Ozzie can realize such change, too.

Congratulations and best wishes to you on the next leg of your career.

Sometimes it is good to find something new. Just quit a tech job in an international software company myself. Got enough money to take 6 months off, still enjoying that. :)

Everyone should try and keep themselves more or less happy and strive to be the best you can be. Doesn't have to be something wrong with the company in order for you to need something new.

    Good luck to you. :)

    Ah, Dr. Scoble ....

    Excellent post. Excellent truths spoken.

Watching the arc of your motions, since first
I noticed you popping up in Dave Winer's universe,
    has been a lovely thing.

The truth of Microsoft, in all its complexity, is
difficult for many folks to grok, let alone publicly

It's seems that not even the brightest stars can change the course of a sinking ship. I have seen the future, it aint on the horizon, it isn't a grand Vista, it is in the little things, that's where the biggest changes occur. It was an exciting time at Microsoft, and as a customer it was exciting as well. Microsoft has lost more than a single employee, it has lost a conduit to it's inner humanity as a corporation.

Yeah, it is only a company that has such a truly unique way of managing their employees "visionary" that can rise to the levels that they have. I cant imagine such tolerance in most industries. "Brains and techies" seem to need a whole different way of handling in order to allow them to express themselves and to bring out their true, creative innner geek. It's mind boggling how Microsoft is still very far from being a competitor for Google or even Yahoo. I searched for medical and health information and even ASK.com was a better resource than Microsoft. Very disappointing.
