I have found so few good podcasts. I am sure there are many out there, but I do not know of them. Surely this depends upon the listener. A niche community is better qualified to rate podcasts in their own niche, but even so there will be divergent opinions, even amongst their own.

Once the technical aspects of the podcast meet a quality standard, it comes down to the market itself, although the record industry has proven that promotion has a wide effect in the popularity and hence audience of a particular media product.

What we are perhaps looking for is that rare gem, that no-one has cottoned on to yet. To that end, the opinion leader becomes a vital conduit in getting it exposure.

There is currently a vacuum for this role which I am sure will be filled. A new medium does not mean it won't follow the same basic laws.

A community may pass on the news about a podcast but an opinion leader will start the ball rolling.

Just my two cents on the topic at hand.

Re: Community Podcast directory?

International Phone counseling. I'm glad it is working for you.

To respond to #10, Elvis - I don't think there exists any objective "good" or "bad" standards for podcasts. In fact, we don't need them and we are better off without them. There is no centralized authority that can tell me which of the 20,000 podcasts will matter to me and which ones are "good". For everyone annointed one deemed "good", there are plenty of people who hate it and vice versa for the "bad" ones.

The AmigoFish project is dedicated to the proposition that these value judgements are irrelevant to the post-scarcity world in which we are drowning in content. What matters is the continuum from "is useful to me" to "is useless to me". By collaborative filtering and comparing your ratings to other people, the aim is to bring you shows that are useful to you, and hang the objective standards.

Re: Community Podcast directory?

These type of apps are getting easier to create. I just did this using the Ning playground. You will find a rough draft here:

http://podcastdir.ning.com/...

Still a little work to do, but the app was created in just a few hours work. If the interest is there I plan to add any requested features and roll it out along with a few international versions.

Re: Community Podcast directory?

Hello,
I noticed that http://www.weblogs.com now tracks podcasts.

In addition, can't find podcasts? How about automatically making them as you like from web pages that have interesting mp3 files.

I wrote a greasemonkey script that does this:
http://blog.medallia.com/

Al

Re: Community Podcast directory?

I vote for AmigoFish as well. It's pretty darned good. As for ratings, reviews, etc. there will ALWAYS be a way to game ratings and such; if a human being needs to interact with it (rate this, vote for this, etc.) then there will be a way to cause mischief with it. How do you find good podcasts? How do you find good X? Most often, I ask a close circle of friends.

I also second http://www.NewEnglandPodcas... and the shows in New England Podcasting. I'd love to find topic specific podcasts that pull in the best parts of other podcasts and maybe add a little commentary along the way. Hmmm... sounds like a blog. :)

Re: Community Podcast directory?

I'd like to I guess Third the suggestion for AmigoFish - I don't use it all that often (though as a number of my previously listened to Podcasts have changed/stopped perhaps it is time I revisit it) but it definitely works extremely well in suggesting new and very interesting (to you) shows. Either by looking at your OPML file from your podcatcher OR simply by starting from shows you like and going out from there - plus you can have it generate an OPML file to import into your podcatcher of choice (I use Doppler which I love though they haven't seemingly updated it in quite a while and it isn't flawless).

Shannon

Re: Community Podcast directory?

How about a Digg like site for podcasts.

Re: Community Podcast directory?

"Sound interesting?"

No.

Re: Community Podcast directory?

I also thought about this and started a site at:

http://www.indypodcasts.com/

I spend time with it as my schedule allows, but it is fully functional.
