The issue is the old dead blogs that people have set up that no one maintains, cares about, or are using old and outdated software (or are using old and outdated hosts). The other issue is of course getting rid of the old comment spam from blogs before people were as proactive about blogspam.

Re: Chris Pirillo tells Google to fix BlogSpot

The word blacklisting and moderation in wordpress has worked pretty well for me. Glad to see you on WordPress, at least some of the time. But I do see that about 80% of the requests for all of my pages are with referer spam.

Why? Because many blogs by default show referrers. Or "so many people are coming here from this blog!"

Make the world a happier place for the moment by educating them to take that off their pages. Show them how to lock out the statistik pages for search engine bots. Scare them by telling them they a) look stupid by letting spammers on their blog through showing it and b) are giving away secrets if they don't lock out the statistics.

Second, let's start thinking about what brings companies like Google to start paying attention. It is not because some people in 'our' part of the blog world posts about it. It does not hurt. It does not even sting.

Re: Chris Pirillo tells Google to fix BlogSpot

He's just starting to notice this? It was an emergency in early 2003, now it's a ramapant epidemic, but it's not just Blogspot, it's also all those dead old blogs, full of spam, eternally making a home on the net. As they say, for every Commons a Toxin...
