Michael: Maryam says "no way." This is how my life has been lately. Sigh. Did I mention that committees suck the life out of all good ideas?

Funny that dictionary.com yields some interesting synonyms for the term "geek" - kook, wombat, nutcake and whacko to name a few. Oh and zombie. zombie.tv? Or maybe odditv.tv (alas .com is gone) Enjoyed the veedeeo. And really sorry to hear about your mom. Take care.
  • Alexandra · 3 years ago
I disagree with your wife - a geek show should have an address that only a geek can decipher. Glad you are 'back'.
  • Alberto S. Lopez · 3 years ago
    Robert,

    geekvideouniverse.com
    geekvideoparadise.com
    techvideosforgeeks.com

I like the last one best. :)

    Good luck.

    Robert,

Thanks for the pingback, but my first name is Jonathan, sorry if that's not understable from my blog, but I'll work on making it more visible.
  • kr8tr · 3 years ago
viddig.com - not available, but I'll transfer it to you if you want it. It's sure short enough :)

Like PodDigger.com, you pay the same fee I did to register it and it's yours!

    Rob
  • Guy · 3 years ago
Actually, I think the inclusion of the word 'geek' (or any possible synonyms) in the title would irrevocably invalidate any coolness it might have. IMHO for all geek products: It's better if you only insinuate that it's for geeks, or if you completely understate this aspect - but expect geeks to automatically understand that it's for them. We will :)

In some cases I think the resume will be what gets people to look at the blog. Blogs are more likely to become a step between resume and interview than replace either on completely. They are going to help or hurt a lot of people.
Let Maryam pick the name of the site. She's good at stuff like that.

Is Myriam a geek? Sorry, but go with the geeks on this one.

Heh. Naming is an interesting topic. Just today I did a post on "Josh's Naming Rule":

    http://www.tinyscreenfuls.com/2006/08/joshs-rul...

Keep spitballing ideas for names, and you'll know the right one when you find it.

FWIW, I've got some domain names registered that are yours if you want them - I tend to register interesting names when they come to me, and think up uses for them later:

    cleverspecies.com
    creativespecies.org
    mediarush.org
    podseeing.com
    eatlikeabirdpooplikeanelephant.com
    pooplikeanelephant.com

If you want any of those, let me know, and I'll transfer them to you, no charge or anything.

Personally, I think you should jump on scoble.tv, if not for PodTech, then for you. :-)
  • Guy · 3 years ago
Heh, that cleverspecies one is fun. I don't think it's the kind of thing Scoble wanted, but I sure like it :)
  • LayZ · 3 years ago
hell, Scoble, how do actors get jobs? how do advertisers get jobs? How do screenwriters get jobs. How do cinematographers get jobs? Think they just point to blogs with their content? You are hiring basically the same type of people. If their resume says they did x, y and z, it should be pretty easy to find out. Your model has been done before. Just ask Paul McCartney how well that worked out for Apple.
  • Robert Scoble · 3 years ago
I used to work for Sean Connery (true story). He had an agent. Far better than a resume.
  • Christopher Coulter · 3 years ago
Resume is but the outline, other ways of proving things up to snuff -- spec script's for writers, portfolio's for artists and cinematographers, blogs for geeks, software-shipped for programmers, credits for actors, ad campaigns for marketing and advertising exec's, real campaigns for political hacks. A blog is but one form, not always applicable to all.

And if any doubt, test them.

PS - Connery doesn't even need an Agent...he's so far beyond that. Of course after being idle this long, and after the League disaster, maybe he does. Well, ok, 'Dr. Henry Jones' supposedly. :)

PSS - How's Olivier Garbe? I see CBOX 3 gotta biggie look at NAB.

Oh, speaking of work. Finding a name and a URL is damn difficult. Everytime I find a name that Maryam and my coworkers like the URL is gone. Now I know why so many companies come up with lame names. Like, well, yelp.

Some Registrars that allow for Domain name searching - will actually track the searches and immediately buy thoses domains they deem to have to most potential...
Ironically, there is a grace period, where they can change their minds without cost....

The new buzzword is Domain Name Kiting
It has already taken off in the Search Engines :D

    welcome to the geek shed?
  • Robert Scoble · 3 years ago
Pat: I thought about something along those lines cause my son always called Dave Winer's house the Internet Hut or something like that.
  • Dana Gardner · 3 years ago
    How about www.ITcortex.com?
  • LayZ · 3 years ago
@22. But you won't be hiring or producing anything near the quality of Connery, so what's your point?
  • Chris · 3 years ago
    Hi Robert,

You can buy NerdyStuff.com off me if you like!

    Chris
  • Nancy · 3 years ago
Okay, so it's a show for geeks. So is Star Trek...could you be a little more specific? :-) Maybe thinking about the theme will give you some ideas?

I suck at thinking of creative, memorable names. The only one that comes to mind is Speegk.com. The G is silent, get it? And, hey, it's available.

"Or a good blogger (not always the same thing as a good writer, by the way)."

I don't disagree, but I'd be interested in an expansion of that thought as i'm sure would your prospective employees.

"I used to work for Sean Connery (true story). He had an agent. Far better than a resume."

    Ahh Robert,

Getting an agent in the entertainment industry is much more difficult than getting paid work within the entertainment industry. You only get an agent when you have some produced credits to your name and when you--as an actor, writer, director etc-- are a predictable revenue stream, as an agent makes her/his living by receiving 10% of the gross revenue that the represented talent receives. Obviously, no one, especially an agent, wants to make 10% of nothing.

Needless to say, to get an agent, you need a list of produced work (resume) and a sample of your work.

BTW, if you ever chat with Sean again, I'm sure he'll tell you some variation of this re: how he got an agent.
  • Brooke A. Wharton · 3 years ago
BTW, in my April 12, May 3, May 4, May 11, May 19, May 25, July 7, August 5, Sept. 14, Sept. 19 posts in 2005 at writingforfilm.com, I discussed the difficulty/strategies of finding any agent (lit.) within the entertainment industry (that's how difficult it is!!)

Wanna hire me? I'm available. Search for more info any way that works for you. I think I'm listed. ;)
  • PRB · 3 years ago
    www.boobtube.com

    Appears to be available...

Is easily identifiable, but does not convey geek content. I suppose you want something more geeky such
    as.

    www.nerdvideo.com

Naturally as with passwords, once published someone will squat on/crack it.

    Good Luck...
  • Robert Scoble · 3 years ago
PRB: I like boobtube.com, but, yeah, doesn't seem to fit the kind of show I'm gonna do. Nerdvideo does, but Robert Cringley's show is NerdTV and I don't wanna be accused of copying or stealing.
  • Dave Cohen · 3 years ago
  • LayZ · 3 years ago
Brooke, I guess by Scoble's logic all one now has to do is blog about their writing or acting and they can get hired. CAA will be crapping their pants if the industry gets ahold of this new strategy ;-)
  • Mian Fahim ul Haq · 3 years ago
You can have www.geekrobes.com and I have more than one reasons to justify this.

    1. Geekrobes sounds similar to Microbes

    2. It all about a Geek known as Robert Scoble. Hence GEEKROBE(rt)S(coble).

    3. Traditional movies show curtains in front of cinema screens. They remove curtain to start the show.
ROBES can be taken as gowns that professors/students wear on convocations etc. So geek movies should be hidden with a robe instead of a traditional curtain. Remove the robe and below is a geek :P

    Just some random thoughts ;).
