Scobleizer: 520 bridge closed cause of high winds

    I wish Toronto had this.

Seriously, 520 bridge needs to be replaced. Everytime I go over it, I can't help but think about what would happen if an earthquake hit that very moment. Unfortunately, I don't have a "floating" car - so I'd be quite out of luck!

Am I glad to be an eastsider or what? :)

Hey if you're stuck in traffic with one of those newfangled Origamis it won't be as painful. :-(

They should not replace the viaduct (tear it down, but don't replace it) and use the saved money to replace 520... with light rail tracks running down the center.

They should replace the viaduct. Replacement of roads should not be prioritized by how convenient it makes your individual commute.

I don't commute, and I almost never drive. I just think the tunnel will cost too much money and downtown should be made more pedestrian friendly and nice. But that's enough for now, I don't want to get into a politics discussion on someone else's blog :).

Tax the drivers that buy the gas and let them pay for the roads. Make it that simple, you drive you pay!

Sweet! Thanks for this Robert, I didn't know this map existed. I love living in Seattle!

Ugh, that commute looked *awful* tonight. I stuck around MS until 10pm tonight waiting for traffic to subside. I really hope the bridge opens up tomorrow, or I'll just work from home. Sigh.

Scoble where is the Origami video

This reminds of an old story of Thomas Edison where he would tell his engineers and workers to get something done, and he would leave them.

Only as he left he would put a padlock on the outside of the door and told them they could get out when the problem was solved.

    Are you sure...

Was the Seattle bridge that sank longer?

The 520 bridge is one of the few places I've ever felt claustrophobic. There's something about being stuck in a place with no way out when you are there in a traffic jam.

Regarding your post title - how can a bridge closure cause high winds?

I presume that you actually mean "because" ;-)
  • scobleizer · 3 years ago
Paul: as my son would say: "cause."

Yes, the "be" is implied. Welcome to West Coast talk. :-)

Not only was 520 closed last night but 148th North from MS has many lights out as well as 70th and other places. I got onto 148th and moved 3 car lengths in 10 minutes. It was going nowhere. I cut through a parking lot and went another route, still took an hour to get to Kenmore!

We already pay gas taxes for the roads but with our expensive real estate and the "not in my backyard" mentality we never get much done. Not to mention the very short window to do a lot of work in dry conditions.

When I lived in the Dallas area, freeways popped up in just a couple years whenever needed. Went there not too long ago and there were several new freeways and toll roads, and they are nice and wide with extra feeder lanes on the sides. It's pretty nice when you have lots of land and double the property taxes.

Even with the good traffic flow maps and cameras here, we need more on the major side streets. It would be nice to know not to go down 148th or 85th or wherever when leaving work. Not enough coverage there.

Boy am I glad to live on Bainbridge Island and work from home. Now if only I could get rid of the Agate Pass bridge and the ferries, we could really have some peace here.
